Minister says verdict almost ready, advises racketeers to exit service

The Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Muhammad Pate, has, for the umpteenth time, reacted to the lingering crisis at the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital (OAUTH) over the alleged job racketeering which has led to the nonpayment of some workers for almost a year.

Mr Pate, in a statement shared on the X handle of the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, explained reasons for the delayed action on the matter, saying the ministry is working out the possibilities of addressing the issue.

Earlier in November 2023, PREMIUM TIMES reported that the ministry issued a statement signed by its Director of Press, Patricia Deworitshe, confirming the indictment of some officials of the hospital including a former Acting Chief Medical Director, Afolabi Owojuyigbe, of engaging in job racketeering.

The ministry said an investigative panel led by Aderemi Azeez found that Mr Owojuyigbe carried out over-employment in the hospital, without provision in the personnel budget.

According to the statement, the panel disclosed that Mr Owojuyigbe, a Consultant anaesthetist, employed over 1,973 staff as against the waiver for 450 vacancies granted to the hospital by the federal government in the 2022 employment process.

Mr Owojuyigbe and “his accomplices” are therefore culpable of job racketeering, according to the panel.

Workers murmur

Meanwhile, as a result of the development many of the employed workers have not received their salaries for about a year since their employment. However, the government is insisting that the employment is illegal and that the government has no money to pay the “illegal” employees.

However, the affected workers have taken to social media to accuse the government of subjecting them to penury.

They said the ministry is deliberately delaying the process to frustrate them out of the job.

Minister responds

The minister has, however, said the ministry is still working to resolve the issue, saying many of those illegally engaged are non-clinical workers “and there is no money in the hospital to pay for them.”

In a statement shared Monday on X, Mr Pate alleged that many of the job seekers and their sponsors influence…

FanDuel Advises Betting On Better Security After Hackers Stole Private Customer Data

FanDuel app loaded on an iPad mini.

FanDuel is sending out emails to customers letting them know of a security incident that compromised certain private details. According to the email, which we received first-hand, the security breach occurred at a third-party vendor that sends out transactional emails on behalf of its clients like FanDuel. So it wasn’t FanDuel that dropped the ball, at least not directly.

The good news is this could have been a lot worse (like when hackers pilfered $300K from DraftKings two months ago). FanDuel says the unauthorized actor (hacker) did not procure any customer passwords, financial account information, or personal information other than names and email addresses. The bad news is that having access to names and details gives bad actors an edge in perpetrating phishing scams.

This is something FanDuel warns in its email, with one of its bits of advice being to “remain vigilant against email ‘phishing’ attempts claiming an issue with your FanDuel account that requires providing personal or private information to resolve the problem.” FanDuel reminds users that it will never email customers directly to request personal information to resolve an issue.

“Watch out for any attempted password resets for your account at FanDuel or elsewhere that you didn’t initiate. If you receive one you did not ask for, avoid clicking on any links in the email and make sure your email provider password is secure, and not one that has been reused or compromised in a data breach,” FanDuel warns in its email.

FanDuel also advises customers to frequently update their passwords and to avoid using the same one for multiple sites (computer security 101, really), though its best bit of advice is to take advantage of the service’s multi-factor authentication for an added layer of protection.

How To Enable Multi-Factor Authentication In FanDuel

FanDuel account settings pages.

To enable MFA, click on Account in the lower-right corner of the app, then navigate to Account settings > two-factor authentication and follow the instructions. You can also find an option to “log out everywhere” in this same settings page.

You should absolutely do this. According to the folks at Bleeping Computer, FanDuel accounts are in high demand and are…

Cisco advises users to lock down WebEx to prevent snooping

Cisco has warned customers to lock down WebEx after a security researcher and journalist found many big-name companies left some online meetings open for anyone to join.

Brian Krebs wrote on his blog that he found companies and organizations that failed to password protect WebEx meetings, which allowed “anyone to join daily meetings about apparently internal discussions and planning sessions.”

Meeting schedules for organizations were available through WebEx’s “Event Center,” he wrote.

Cisco has a variety of options for WebEx that are intended to accommodate sensitive meetings and ones intended for the public.
