EU and UK Blame Russia for Hack That Disrupted Viasat’s Satellite Internet

UPDATE: The White House is also blaming the Kremlin for the hack on Viasat. “The United States is joining with allies and partners to condemn Russia’s destructive cyber activities against Ukraine,” the US State Department said in a statement.

Original Story: The European Union and UK are officially blaming the Russian government for the Feb. 24 hack that targeted satellite internet provider Viasat.

On Tuesday, both the EU and UK condemned the Kremlin for the cyberattack, which caused internet outages for thousands of Viasat customers across Europe.

In response, the EU is mulling whether to punish Russia. “The European Union, working closely with its partners, is considering further steps to prevent, discourage, deter and respond to such malicious behavior in cyberspace,” the governing body said.

The hack occurred an hour before Russia began its invasion of Ukraine, according to the UK. The goal was to shut down satellite internet access for Ukraine’s military. However, the hack also ensnared consumer and commercial customers, including wind farm operators in Europe.

The EU didn’t elaborate on the evidence linking Russia to the hack on Viasat. But the UK cited an analysis from its National Cyber Security Centre, which found that it was “almost certain Russia was responsible.” The US also contributed intelligence suggesting the Kremlin was behind the attack, the UK added.

Security researchers have uncovered the malware likely responsible for causing the disruption at Viasat. Dubbed AcidRain, it’s designed to erase data from modems and routers, and has similarities with another malware strain that’s been connected to Russian state-sponsored hackers, according to the security firm SentinelOne.

In the meantime, the EU is concerned the continent could suffer a similar incident in the future, citing how Russia continues to bombard Ukraine with destructive malware attacks.

“Cyberattacks targeting Ukraine, including against critical infrastructure, could spill over into other countries and cause systemic effects putting the security of Europe’s citizens at risk,” the EU said.

Viasat didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment. But the US…

US and allies blame Russia for Viasat hack ahead of Ukraine invasion

WASHINGTON — The U.S., Canada and European powers this week blamed Russia for a February cyberattack that disrupted internet service for tens of thousands of people in the critical moments that preceded the latest invasion of Ukraine.

The Feb. 24 attack on Viasat Inc., a California-based provider of high-speed satellite broadband services and secure networking systems covering military and commercial markets worldwide, was meant to cripple Ukrainian command and control as Russian forces advanced, U.S. and U.K. officials said May 10. The attack spilled over, impacting wind farms and internet users in central Europe as well.

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Tuesday condemned the hack, describing Russia’s alleged belligerence in cyberspace as “irresponsible” and “destructive.” A statement from the European Union similarly described the attack as “unacceptable” and “indiscriminate.”

The bloc said it would consider additional steps to “prevent, discourage, deter and respond to such malicious behavior in cyberspace.”

While the U.S. and others did not tie the digital assault to any one specific element of the Russian government, Estonia pinned the blame on Russia’s infamous intelligence directorate, known as GRU.

“These cyberattacks run counter to international law and, therefore, we are unequivocally condemning them,” Estonian Foreign Minister Eva-Maria Liimets said in a statement. “The timing of this attack on 24 February, when a wide-scale military attack against Ukraine began, is significant and shows once again that cyberattacks are an integral part of how Russia wages war.”

Moscow has historically denied such operations.

The explicit attribution is the result of new intelligence, according to the U.K. Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, and comes as allied cyber leaders meet in Newport, South Wales, for a conference on shared threats.

“This is clear and shocking evidence of a deliberate and malicious attack by Russia against Ukraine, which had significant consequences on ordinary people and businesses in Ukraine and across Europe,” U.K. Foreign Secretary Liz Truss said in a statement.

Right now, almost all tech manufacturers are already updating their handsets with the latest Android 12 OS. But, this is the case with the original Surface Duo model.

Because of this, some experts claimed that the delay of Android 11 OS on the dual-screen gadget is another reason for consumers to avoid purchasing this Microsoft smartphone.

Although this is the case, the giant software developer confirmed that it is already testing the integration of Android 11 on its Surface Duo. But, Google still needs to do some verifications before the smartphone system is integrated into the handset.

Why Microsoft Delays Surface Duo’s Android 11 OS Update

According to Android Community‘s latest report, the issue could be with the current staffing of Microsoft and Google. As of the moment, employees in different agencies and companies are still on vacation to celebrate New Year’s Eve.

Experts believe that Microsoft and Google are still short on staff since their employees are also enjoying their vacation leaves.

But, this is still not the major reason since tech firms are usually scheduling the release of the software. There should be no delay if Microsoft did this since the processes would go as planned.

If you are a Surface Duo, the best thing you can do right now is still wait for Microsoft’s further announcements before making any conclusion.
