Madison teen, accused in Memorial bomb threats, now charged in New York with hacking a sports betting website

A Madison teen who still faces felony charges over bomb threats made at Memorial High School last year was arrested Thursday and charged by federal authorities in New York City with hacking an online sports betting website, which had user accounts that were then plundered.

The charges filed on Monday against Joseph H. Garrison, 18, in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York allege that in November — about three months after Garrison was charged and released for the Memorial threats — he launched what authorities called a “credential stuffing attack” to find username and password combinations, gleaned from sources on the “dark web,” that would work on other websites where users used the same username-password combinations.

That included the fantasy sports and sports betting website, which was not identified by name in the complaint.

He then sold the working combinations to buyers on the internet, according to a criminal complaint, and provided detailed instructions on how to use them on the betting site. The buyers used them to steal about $600,000 from the site’s user accounts, the complaint states.

In todays world, its high tech versus high crime. Police work like dusting for prints is now supplemented with point and click.

A credential stuffing attack uses a computer program to rapidly attempt to log into financial accounts using a list of known username-password combinations to search for working logins.

Buyers took money from about 1,600 of the site’s 60,000 accounts that were accessed using the stolen credentials, the complaint states.

Intruders were able to clear out an individual user account by setting up a new payment method and depositing $5 into the account to verify it, then withdrawing the account’s balance through that new payment method, the complaint states.

Investigators identified Garrison as the person who carried out…

Former NATO Commander says Russia will ‘carpet bomb’ Ukraine

Retired Admiral James Stavridis has written books on leadership, decision-making and even sounded the alarm on China and cyber warfare in his book, “2034: A Novel of the Next World War.” In an opinion piece for Bloomberg, he sounding a new alarm for the West: Russia is going to carpet bomb Ukraine unless we do something about it.

Carpet bombing involves progressively stepping up the size and scope of aerial bombing attacks to completely destroy a given area. This is the kind of strategy used in World War II, before the development of smart weapons. Its advantages include destroying industrial capacity and enemy infrastructure. But because it doesn’t distinguish between military and civilian targets, carpet bombing is considered a violation of the 1924 Geneva Protocols – a war crime.

That fact is unlikely to keep Russian President Vladimir Putin from using it.

Stavridis says the ground war in Ukraine will enter a slowdown phase, as both sides deal with the wet, rainy autumn and prepare for the ground to freeze before major combat operations can be ramped back up. Ukraine, he says, will have the advantage on the ground, with its high morale and highly-trained troops, supplied by the West. Facing a conscript army of drunks and criminals, Ukraine is the superior force.

The air war, he says, is another story. In Russia’s most recent conflict in Syria, Russian air forces employed the saturation bombing strategy, using “dumb” munitions to pound Syrian rebel forces and Syrian cities. Dropping thousands of high explosive bombs, the Russians sought to destroy the forces aligned against dictator Bashar al-Asad, along with any support they have had. Worst of all, the strategy worked.

To illustrate his point, Stavridis says the appointment of Russia’s chief Air Force officer to command of the overall war in Ukraine is a harbinger of things to come. Colonel General Sergey Surovikin oversaw the atrocities committed by Russian air forces in Syria and is…

Corero extends automatic DDoS protection to counter ‘carpet bomb’ and botnet attacks

Amersham, UK. 23 February 2022 – Corero Network Security plc, a provider of real-time, DDoS (distributed denial of service) cyber defence solutions, is extending its automatic protection against Carpet Bomb and Botnet attacks.

Corero’s mission is to make the internet a safer place to do business by protecting against the downtime and disruption caused by DDoS attacks. Corero is enabling organisations around the globe to maintain business continuity in the event of DDoS attacks, with its intelligently automated, SmartWall DDoS protection solution.

As DDoS attacks continue to grow in magnitude, frequency, and sophistication, it is no longer safe to address this growing problem with traditional blackholing or manual interventions. Corero’s real-time automatic approach is the only way to effectively prevent DDoS-downtime as it blocks over 98% of attacks in seconds, with no operator intervention required. Our ongoing market growth is being further propelled by multiple new product enhancements which ensure we continue to do so.

Corero’s new SmartWall DDoS protection includes:

  • Automatic Spread Spectrum attack protection to address the increase in volumetric ‘Carpet Bomb’ attacks that target entire network ranges and enables them to evade conventional DDoS mitigation solutions.
  • Automatic Advanced Botnet/Source flood protection to address the harmful high-rate traffic sources experienced with Botnet flood attacks as well as new TCP protocol flood protections (SYN-ACK, ACK, etc…)
  • Intelligent Fragment protection using Corero’s patented heuristics-based Smart-Rule technology enhances the ability to automatically block the large volumes of packet fragments associated with many of today’s DDoS attacks.

“As botnet and carpet bomb attacks continue to increase, these new capabilities enable Corero to further expand our automatic DDoS protection to address these significant threats, helping to keep our customers, and theirs, online, all the time,” says Corero’s head of security operations..

Bomb Threat Hacker Gets 8-Year Prison Sentence

An American hacker has been sent to prison for carrying out a series of cyber and swatting attacks, including sending bogus threats of shootings and bombings to schools in the United Kingdom and the United States.

North Carolina resident Timothy Dalton Vaughn also called in a false report of an airplane hijacking involving a jetliner traveling from London to San Francisco.

The 22-year-old, known online by the handles “WantedbyFeds” and “Hacker_R_US,” was arrested in February 2019 by special agents with the FBI.

Authorities found that Vaughn had in his possession 200 sexually explicit images and videos depicting children, including at least one toddler.

Vaughn was a member of a worldwide collective of computer hackers and swatters who call themselves the “Apophis Squad.”

The squad caused disruptions by making threatening phone calls, sending false reports of violent school attacks via email, and launching distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks on websites.

“Vaughn and others sent emails to at least 86 school districts threatening armed students and explosives,” said the Department of Justice.

“The threatened attacks included the imminent detonation of a bomb made with ammonium nitrate and fuel oil, rocket-propelled grenade heads placed under school buses, and the placement of land mines on sports fields.”

Squad members sometimes reported threats using “spoofed” email addresses to make it appear as though the reports had been sent by innocent parties, including the mayor of London.

Among the squad’s victims was a Long Beach motorsport company whose website hoonigan.com was knocked offline for three days by a DDoS attack. The business received an email demanding a ransom of 1.5 Bitcoin (worth approximately $20,000) to cease the attack.

The Apophis Squad also hacked and defaced the website of a university in Colombia so that site visitors were greeted with the image of Adolf Hitler clutching a sign that read “YOU ARE HACKED.”

In November 2019, Vaughn pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to convey threats to injure, convey false information concerning use of explosive device, and intentionally damage a computer; one count of computer…
