Comcast Business Releases 2023 Small Business Cybersecurity Report

Comcast Business SecurityEdge™ blocked over 1.1 billion malware attacks, countered 1.1 billion bot attacks, and thwarted 395 million phishing attempts during the second quarter of 2023

PHILADELPHIA–(BUSINESS WIRE)–
Comcast Business has released findings from its 2023 Comcast Business l Small Business Cybersecurity Report. The report found that small businesses were under frequent threat from cyber-attacks from July 2022 to June 2023, with daily malware activity roughly doubling year-over-year and peaks in both holiday seasons.

“As small businesses embrace remote and hybrid work policies, relying on off-network and mobile devices for access to applications and data, they become more appealing targets for cybercriminals,” said Shena Seneca Tharnish, Vice President of Secure Networking and Cybersecurity Solutions at Comcast Business. “In the past year, SecurityEdge™ has successfully thwarted billions of threats, helping to protect tens of thousands of small businesses.”

The widespread use of internet-connected devices has given rise to a substantial surge in threat actors targeting small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs), with malware, phishing, and botnets being the most common threats. Additionally, there is a concerning lack of security measures in place for mobile devices, as Comcast Business found that nearly 1 in 10 devices, on average, attempted to connect to domains associated with malware, phishing, or malicious bot activity.

“In our current digital age, the importance of safeguarding devices and data, regardless of their location, cannot be overstated. It’s critical for organizations of all sizes to stay secure in order to maintain trust from employees, customers, and other stakeholders,” said Jonathan Morgan, Vice President of Network Security Product Management at Akamai. “With Comcast Business’s SecurityEdge, customers can rest assured that they have the right tools and support in place to help protect their connected devices. We’re proud to be a key component in that solution with our Secure Internet Access services that protect businesses and families across the globe.”

Comcast partnership with Emerald South brings WiFi hubs across the South Side

For 10 years, Jennifer Maddox has run Future Ties, an after-school program at Woodlawn’s Parkway Gardens.

As a former security officer for the apartment complex, which has more than 1,000 school-age children, Maddox said she felt the students needed “a safe space . . . to feel comfortable and socialize and have a space to do their homework, without being in fear.”

Despite the program being “rewarding and fulfilling,” Maddox said one thing has remained an issue: internet connectivity.

It was an issue exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, when students around the complex couldn’t access the internet to attend virtual classes or turn in assignments.

But a new partnership between the Emerald South Economic Development Collaborative and Comcast will help provide connectivity.

Last week, Emerald South and Comcast announced the launch of the South Side Connectivity Collaborative, an initiative focused on bringing internet access to areas of the South Side.

“We know that connectivity is critical,” said Ghian Foreman, Emerald South’s CEO. “COVID has really exposed the lack of broadband connectivity.”

The South Side Connectivity Collaborative will place 11 “Lift Zones,” or high capacity Wi-Fi services, around Woodlawn, Bronzeville, Grand Boulevard and Washington Park.

“With all the distance learning and the homework gap that’s going on in the country, this is an opportunity for kids to go in and do schoolwork, do research, that sort of thing,” said Jack Segal, Comcast’s vice president of communications for the Chicago region.

He added the Lift Zones will also provide opportunities for adults who need access to internet services for things like job hunting.

Already, Lift Zones have been installed at K.L.E.O. Community Family Life Center, 119 E. Garfield Blvd. and Bright Star Community Outreach, 735 East 44th St.

Other Lift Zones will be at places like Bronzeville’s Black Star Project, 3509 S. Martin Luther King Drive; Washington Park’s Equality Should Be Normal, 239 E. 51st St.; and Future Ties at 6418 S. Martin Luther King Drive.

Segal expects all Lift Zones to be installed within the next two months.

Comcast announced late Friday that it is suspending enforcement of its data cap and overage fees for 60 days during the coronavirus pandemic.

“With so many people working and educating from home, we want our customers to access the Internet without thinking about data plans,” Comcast’s announcement said. “While the vast majority of our customers do not come close to using 1TB of data in a month, we are pausing our data plans for 60 days giving all customers unlimited data for no additional charge.”

Normally, Comcast charges an extra $ 50 per month for unlimited data, or $ 10 for each additional block of 50GB after customers exceed 1TB.
