VMM-268 Showcases MV-22 Versatility, Strengthens Relationships on 6,100 Mile Trans-Pacific Flight > United States Marine Corps Flagship > News Display

U.S. Marines with Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 268 concluded their deployment with Marine Rotational Force – Darwin by executing a 6,100 mile transpacific flight from Australia to Hawaii, September 13-18, 2022. The occasion marks the second time this year that MV-22 Ospreys from Marine Aircraft Group 24 successfully completed long-range maritime self-deployments. Earlier this year, VMM-363 executed a similar mission, flying approximately 5,000 miles from Hawaii to the Philippines for Exercise Balikatan 22.

The monumental journey began in Darwin on September 13 as two VMM-268 MV-22s and one KC-130J from Marine Aerial Refueler Transport Squadron 152 departed for Royal Australian Air Force Base Amberley. Over the next several days, the Marines would land in Fiji, American Samoa, and the Republic of Kiribati before completing the final leg to Marine Corps Base Hawaii Kaneohe Bay.

“The MV-22s are capable and versatile aircraft for operations in the Pacific,” said Capt. John Wilkinson, a pilot assigned to VMM-268.

“It’s important to remember that flights of this magnitude wouldn’t be possible without the dedication and support of our Marines and our allies and partners.”  Capt. John Wilkinson, a pilot assigned to VMM-268

While transiting the islands of the South Pacific via a path resembling the Corps’ island-hopping campaign of World War II, they prioritized their interactions with local leaders and communities along the way. In Fiji, the Marines welcomed airfield support staff onboard for a tour and later came together to share a meal and exchange tokens of appreciation for support.

In American Samoa, the Marines had several memorable interactions. Sergeant Tyrone Travers, a native of the island, embraced his sister for the first time in six years. Colonel Manlee Herrington, MAG-24 commanding officer, met with two retired Marines; Sgt. Maj. Tusipasi Suiaunoa, whose last assignment was as the Headquarters and Support Battalion Sergeant Major at U.S. Marine Corps Forces, Pacific; and Cpl. Ketsemame Meaole, a veteran of the war in Vietnam.

While in the Republic of Kiribati, the Marines delivered humanitarian aid supplies to the community,…

Hackers Targeted News Corp’s Tech Suppliers

Hackers with suspected links to China targeted

News Corp’s

third-party technology suppliers, according to a company filing.

News Corp, which owns the New York Post and The Wall Street Journal parent Dow Jones, said it was the target of a hack that accessed emails and documents of journalists and other employees.

The company in a securities filing on Friday said it “relies on third-party providers for certain technology and ‘cloud-based’ systems and services that support a variety of business operations,” and that one of these systems “was the target of persistent cyberattack activity.”

The attack came as U.S. officials over the past year have been increasingly warning of criminal and nation-state hackers breaking into the computer systems of organizations through sometimes opaque supply chains for software and other technologies.

A News Corp spokesman on Friday declined to comment on its vendors or which data was stolen, citing a continuing investigation. In its email to staff, News Corp said that computer systems housing consumer and financial data weren’t affected.

“In addition, we have not experienced related interruptions to our business operations,” Chief Technology Officer David Kline and Chief Information Security Officer Billy O’Brien wrote in the email. “Based on our investigation to date, we believe the threat activity is contained.”

Messrs. Kline and O’Brien said their inquiry is in its early stages.

The Wall Street Journal reported Friday that hackers had access to News Corp’s systems since at least February 2020, gaining access to emails and Google Docs, including drafts of articles. Beijing that year expelled U.S. journalists

Roxbury Marine Corps Veteran Honored by Morris County, Senator & Roxbury

The Morris County Freeholders joined state Senator Anthony Bucco and Roxbury Mayor Robert DeFillippo today in bestowing honors on Veteran Jonathan Snyder of Succasunna, a cyber-security and cyber warfare expert whose talents were applied during his 15 years in the U.S. Marine Corps and his continuing service with the New Jersey Army National Guard.

Jonathan Snyder, USMC, Was Issued Three Separate Awards

Snyder, already decorated numerous times by the military, received the new honors at a small ceremony inside the township council chambers at the Roxbury Township Municipal Building, where he was joined by his wife, Lauren, and their daughter, Scarlett, 5 years old. They also have a 1-year-old son, Sean, who remained home with his grandmother.

“Less than one percent of our American population puts on the uniform of our country to protect us, and you chose to wear that uniform and join that small group of men and women,” said Senator Bucco. “I’m here to today to say thank you for your service and to present to you a Joint Senate and Assembly Citation recognizing your years of service of protecting our country and keeping it safe. God Bless you.”

Snyder, who has been working in cyber security since leaving the Marines in 2015, is now a Senior Director for a leading cyber-security and consulting firm. He joined the Marines in January 2001, and he was deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom in June 2005, serving in combat operations until May 2006. He was later deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in June 2011, serving until July 2012.

“You served 15 years in the United States Marine Corps participating in combat operations in Afghanistan and Iraq. You also spent three years of that service working on Counter-terrorism probes, as well as National Security and Criminal Cyber intrusions,” said Freeholder Kathryn DeFillippo, a Roxbury resident. “You also have continued your service by remaining in the New Jersey Army National Guard. For that dedication to protecting our nation, we present you with the Morris County Distinguished Military Service Medal.”
