Pixel 4a 5G and Pixel 5 get surprise final updates

TL;DR

  • There are new Android updates for the Pixel 4a 5G and the Pixel 5.
  • The update is small (just over 10MB) and likely just security updates and bug fixes.
  • This is unexpected, as both phones reached end-of-life status in November 2023.

Earlier this week, Google rolled out the latest Android security patch to active Pixel devices. As expected, the oldest phone to receive that patch was the Google Pixel 5a, which launched in August 2021. However, now there are two updates for other, older Pixel phones: the Pixel 4a 5G and Pixel 5.

You can find the two updates on Google’s list of OTA releases. However, you don’t need to download them from there if you’re not in a rush. Since this is an OTA update, you’ll get a notification on your Pixel 4a 5G or Pixel 5 in the next few days if you haven’t already.

Unfortunately, Google is being very secretive about what’s included with these updates. Thanks to a Reddit thread, we see that the update is very small at just over 10MB. It doesn’t include a new security update, as it’s still on the November 2023 patch. Being that it’s so small and doesn’t have the latest fixes, we can only imagine this is an update that specifically addresses critical bugs or security risks for these two phones. However, for what it’s worth, one Redditor does claim that their phone feels “snappier and smoother” after the update.

Google has been known to do this in the past. When incredibly critical security exploits are found, the company pulls Pixels out of update retirement to get the fix out there. However, this rarely includes new features or other dramatic changes.

Google Pixel 4 & 4 XL get final update w/ February security patch

Google has updated the Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL for what will likely be the final time, bringing the two phones up to the February 2023 security patch.

First released in 2019, the Google Pixel 4 series received three years of monthly Android security updates and Pixel-specific improvements, including the full update to Android 13 last August. Traditionally, for flagship Pixel phones, Google releases one final update after the monthly updates expire, and the Pixel 4 is no different.

Today, side by side with the broader February 2023 update for current Pixel phones, Google rolled an update to owners of the Pixel 4, the first such update since October 2022. The update brings the security improvements of the February 2023 Android Security Bulletin, and likely not much else. Judging from the build number — which starts with “TP1A” instead of “TQ1A” — the new Pixel 4 update does not bring the improvements of Android 13 QPR1, released in December.

This likely final Pixel 4 update should be rolling out now through carriers and can also be downloaded and installed manually.

  • Pixel 4: Android 13, TP1A.221005.002.B2, Feb 2023
  • Pixel 4 XL: Android 13, TP1A.221005.002.B2, Feb 2023

Down the line, if the need arises, it’s possible Google may launch an additional patch for the Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL, as the company has done in the past. Regardless, it’s time to bid a fond farewell to a phone that dared to do things differently — with its Soli motion sensors — and the first Pixel phone to introduce face unlock support.

Champions League final delayed for security reasons | Sports | German football and major international sports news | DW

The Champions League Final between Liverpool and Real Madrid in the Stade de France, Paris was delayed by 30 minutes for “security reasons” UEFA said Saturday.

Inside the stadium, UEFA posted a statement inside the stadium saying kickoff had been delayed due to the “late arrival” of fans but a host of reports from journalists and fans on the ground suggested otherwise as chaos reigned.

Television footage showed many empty seats in the Liverpool end as thousands of fans were still outside with 30 minutes to go before the original kickoff time. Social media coverage was full of reports from Liverpool fans saying they had been queueing for hours but still couldn’t gain entry. There were also multiple reports of tear gas being used.

Both teams returned to the pitch for a second warmup owing to the delays. When the game did kickoff, many fans were still outside and reports of further tear gas use continued.

DW’s Matt Pearson was on the ground in Paris and reported the following:

“It’s chaos. It was when I went in at 6 and is now. I’ve just been outside and there’s tear gas in the air, fans trying to get in and police charging gates. There are still hundreds, even thousands of fans outside. Anyone at this point should have had a ticket check.”

This comes just a week after chaotic scenes ahead of the Europa League Final in Sevilla.

Later, Liverpool released a statement saying they were requesting a formal investigation into “unacceptable issues.”

UEFA said that “turnstiles at the Liverpool end became blocked by thousands of fans who had purchased fake tickets which did not work”, before adding it was “sympathetic” to those affectd and that a review would be undertaken.

After the game, Parisian police released a statement saying “a large number of supporters without match tickets or holding false tickets disrupted access to the Stade de France at the external security perimeter. These fans exerted strong pressure to enter the stadium and delayed the access of ticketed spectactors. Taking advantage of this action, a number of people managed to get through the gates protecting the stadium.”
