UK defence ministry fined for Afghan data breach

The UK defence ministry has been fined 350,000 ($440,000) for disclosing personal information of 265 Afghans seeking to flee the Taliban, a data watchdog announced on Wednesday.

“This deeply regrettable data breach let down those to whom our country owes so much,” said UK data commissioner John Edwards.

The error saw the email addresses of hundreds of people, including Afghan interpreters potentially eligible for relocation to Britain, openly included in the “to” field, rather than blind copied.

It first came to light in September 2021, soon after the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan, and the chaotic efforts to evacuate vulnerable people from the country.

Ben Wallace, who was defence minister at the time, apologised and disclosed that one official had been suspended.

Britain’s Afghanistan evacuation plan has been widely criticised, with the government accused by MPs of “systemic failures of leadership, planning and preparation”.

Hundreds of Afghans eligible for relocation were left behind, many with their lives potentially at risk after details of staff and job applicants were left at the abandoned British embassy in Kabul.

In his ruling, Edwards said “very challenging” conditions on the ground and fast-paced decision-making were no excuse for not protecting personal information.

Those affected “were vulnerable to reprisal and at risk of serious harm,” he added. “When the level of risk and harm to people heightens, so must the response.”

A total of 245 people had their details inadvertently disclosed, 55 of whom had thumbnail pictures on their email profiles.

Two people “replied all” to all recipients and one included their location, Edwards’ office said.

“The data disclosed, should it have fallen into the hands of the Taliban, could have resulted in a threat to life,” it added in a statement.

Recipients were told to delete the email, change their email address and tell the team in charge of relocations of their new details via a secure form.

Two other data breaches were discovered during the investigation. A total of 265 people were affected in all three…

Teen fined by airline over ridiculous clothing baggage hack

This “runway” attire wasn’t going to fly.

Another day, another traveler with a bold new way to game the luggage fine system. An Australian teen was slapped with a fine after attempting to circumvent an airline baggage fee — by donning more than 13 pounds of clothing, as seen in a video blowing up online.

“I looked like a bear. I’m small and petite but I looked like the exact opposite,” Adriana Ocampo, 19, told South West News Service of her backfired travel hack, which she attempted to pull during a Jetstar Airways flight from Melbourne to her hometown of Adelaide.

The teen, who had just been on a girls’ trip with pal Emily Altamura, also 19, said she knew her luggage was over the airline’s 15-pound limit after she could “barely close” her bag in the hotel room.

Nonetheless, the duo schlepped their oversize load to the airport in the hopes that the crew wouldn’t have time to check — which proved not to be the case.

“When we went to board, we saw them pulling out a trolley with a scale,” rued Ocampo.

“They said the fine was $65 and we didn’t feel like spending $65 so we went back and put more clothes on,” said Adriana Ocampo.

That’s when she got an unorthodox idea.

“We thought the only way we can take the weight off our bags is if we put it on ourselves so we started putting on our jackets and coats,” said the gal, who was forced to do this routine a second time because her bag was still over the limit.

In the aforementioned footage, the Aussie can be seen laughing hysterically as she yanks all her clothing out of the suitcase and dons it until she’s wearing 15 different things, including an iPad stuffed in her pants.

Her friend, meanwhile, follows suit, until the two resemble Ralphie’s jacket-swaddled little brother from “A Christmas Story.”

“As well as layers of jackets and jumpers, I had baggy trousers on and I was stuffing t-shirts and my iPad in them,” described the human garment rack. “I had about six layers on and stuff in my pockets.”

Tech Bytes: Meta is fined, Tiktok denies hacking, new Apple Watch Pro

Meta’s big fine. Facebook’s parent company has been hit with a 400-million dollar penalty, for breaking European Union data privacy rules, because of its treatment of children’s data on Instagram. Meta says it plans to appeal the fine, setting up what could be a lengthy legal battle.

Tiktok is denying reports that it’s been hacked. A hacking group claims it breached the platform and accessed more than two billion records, including user data. But Tiktok says it found no evidence of a security breach.

Images of what may be the new Apple Watch Pro are making their way around the internet, and they appear to show the reports about a new button on the device are true. However it’s purpose isn’t known. The pictures also appear to show both a larger display and casing.
