I Wore a Fishing Vest on a Flight to Avoid Paying $65 for a Carry-on Bag

  • I tried to the viral fishing vest travel hack to avoid paying for a carry-on during my recent JetBlue flight.
  • The trend was popularized on TikTok as a way to avoid airlines’ add-on fees
  • I fit clothes, my laptop, and toiletries into the vest’s 18 pockets and boarded the plane without an issue.

It started out as a joke. Wouldn’t it be funny if I tried this goofy TikTok trend and embarrassed myself by wearing a fishing vest in the airport?

Sorry reader. This is no light-hearted blog. This is a story of revenge.

A brief interlude for my villain origin story:

I stupidly booked the wrong date for my flight. I couldn’t believe it. It must have been karma for making fun of my mom when she made the same mistake years ago, forcing us to drive 15 hours to South Carolina (I never let her forget it).

My ego sufficiently crushed, I called JetBlue to try and change the ticket. After sitting on hold for five minutes, I was informed by the robotic voice that I would be charged a $25 service fee for talking to someone on the phone. Equally enraged at myself and the airline, I hung up and tried changing the flight myself.

Now would be a good time to mention that I purchased a Blue Basic ticket

The wonderfully cheap fare option came with a long list of restrictions, including a $100 change fee that I willingly agreed to since I, a seasoned traveler, would…

It was a tense few hours for airline passengers arriving in Vancouver from Edmonton Friday, as Mounties boarded the plane asking who had used AirDrop to send out an alleged photo of a bomb.

Police were called out to investigate Flair Airlines flight 2799 landing at YVR from Edmonton.

According to a Row 27 passenger on board, who has asked not to be identified in connection with the breach, the ordeal was “very scary.”

She recalled three Mounties boarding the plane a few hours after it landed on the taxiway around 11:44 p.m.

At first, the officers approached a man near Row 11, according to Vancouver’s Jesse Boyk, who was also on the flight.

“They were talking to the guy about Airdrop,” Boyk said. “One of the cops asked him to show them his phone.”

Another officer paced the aisles, asking passengers who had sent or received AirDrop messages about the bomb being on the plane, both passengers confirmed.

Before RCMP cleared the plane and passengers were unloaded at 2:15 a.m., they were told little about the potential security breach.

“The pilot came on and told three announcements which were basically all the same,” recalled the Row 27 passenger. “He said, ‘We are investigating a security threat … We need to follow what the RCMP instructs.’”

Mounties eventually told passengers that Apple was being contacted about the incident, Boyk said. “It was all very surprising.”

Police are still investigating.

VMM-268 Showcases MV-22 Versatility, Strengthens Relationships on 6,100 Mile Trans-Pacific Flight > United States Marine Corps Flagship > News Display

U.S. Marines with Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 268 concluded their deployment with Marine Rotational Force – Darwin by executing a 6,100 mile transpacific flight from Australia to Hawaii, September 13-18, 2022. The occasion marks the second time this year that MV-22 Ospreys from Marine Aircraft Group 24 successfully completed long-range maritime self-deployments. Earlier this year, VMM-363 executed a similar mission, flying approximately 5,000 miles from Hawaii to the Philippines for Exercise Balikatan 22.

The monumental journey began in Darwin on September 13 as two VMM-268 MV-22s and one KC-130J from Marine Aerial Refueler Transport Squadron 152 departed for Royal Australian Air Force Base Amberley. Over the next several days, the Marines would land in Fiji, American Samoa, and the Republic of Kiribati before completing the final leg to Marine Corps Base Hawaii Kaneohe Bay.

“The MV-22s are capable and versatile aircraft for operations in the Pacific,” said Capt. John Wilkinson, a pilot assigned to VMM-268.

“It’s important to remember that flights of this magnitude wouldn’t be possible without the dedication and support of our Marines and our allies and partners.”  Capt. John Wilkinson, a pilot assigned to VMM-268

While transiting the islands of the South Pacific via a path resembling the Corps’ island-hopping campaign of World War II, they prioritized their interactions with local leaders and communities along the way. In Fiji, the Marines welcomed airfield support staff onboard for a tour and later came together to share a meal and exchange tokens of appreciation for support.

In American Samoa, the Marines had several memorable interactions. Sergeant Tyrone Travers, a native of the island, embraced his sister for the first time in six years. Colonel Manlee Herrington, MAG-24 commanding officer, met with two retired Marines; Sgt. Maj. Tusipasi Suiaunoa, whose last assignment was as the Headquarters and Support Battalion Sergeant Major at U.S. Marine Corps Forces, Pacific; and Cpl. Ketsemame Meaole, a veteran of the war in Vietnam.

While in the Republic of Kiribati, the Marines delivered humanitarian aid supplies to the community,…
