Hackers targeted Fort Worth’s cyber system over Texas’ gender surgery stance, city officials say

The City of Fort Worth believes it was targeted by cybercriminals because of Texas’ stance on sex reassignment surgery, officials said.

The city’s Information Technology Solutions department learned about a post claiming that the city’s website was hacked on Friday, according to FOX 4 Dallas. They believe the hacker group SeigedSec, who allegedly posted about the incident on Telegram, was behind the attack.

“We have decided to make a message toward the U.S. Government, Texas happens to be one of the largest states banning gender-affirming care and for that we have made Texas a target,” the post allegedly said, according to city officials. 

Earlier this month, Texas Governor Greg Abbott signed a bill that banned gender transitioning treatment for minors, including sex reassignment surgeries and cross-sex hormones.

The City of Fort Worth’s Information Technology Solutions Department discovered a post claiming that the city’s website was hacked on Friday. (FOX 4 Dallas-Fort Worth)

The information that was hacked pertained to work orders in the city’s system, such as invoices, emails between staff and spreadsheets. The IT department said all of the breached information would have been made public via a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) order, if requested.

The hackers reportedly stole information from a website that tracked city orders, but no sensitive information was released.

“The City of Fort Worth has confirmed that the posted information did originate from our computer systems. However, the data came from a website that our workers use to manage their maintenance activities, not from the city’s public-facing internet website,” Fort Worth’s IT Solutions Director Kevin Gunn explained at a presser on Saturday.

“[There is] no indication that any other systems were accessed, nor any other evidence of sensitive information such as social security or banking information was accessed or released,” Gunn added.

DVIDS – News – U.S. Army cyber leaders help build partnership, interoperability with French Army during Fort Gordon visit

FORT GORDON, Ga. — U.S. and French Army leaders strengthened the partnership and mutual security cooperation between the two nations during a visit by Gen. Pierre Schill, Chief of the French Army, with U.S. Army Cyber Center of Excellence (CCOE) and U.S. Army Cyber Command (ARCYBER) leaders here, Aug. 24, 2022.

The event was part of a five-day visit by Schill with the U.S. Army at the invitation of U.S. Army Chief of Staff Gen. James C. McConville, to further bilateral cooperation and interoperability between the two armies and familiarize French leadership with U.S. efforts such as modernization programs, multi-domain operations, organizations and capabilities, and human resources initiatives.

Schill’s visit to Fort Gordon helped to establish and build French relationships, shared objectives and future interoperability with ARCYBER and the CCOE. U.S. leaders provided overviews of their organizations’ missions and structures; of the training and development of Soldiers in “immaterial domain” specialties such as cyber and information operations, and of how they are preparing for future challenges and managing and seeking solutions to capability gaps.

The event is an extension of America’s association with its oldest ally and NATO partner and the longstanding U.S.-French collaboration in cyberspace.

Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III highlighted the value of that partnership in defeating malicious adversaries in cyberspace during a meeting with French leaders last year.

“Our countries have a strong shared interest in protecting our critical infrastructure and that of our allies, including cyber infrastructure, and that’s a foundation for our future cooperation in the area of technological infrastructure more broadly,” Austin said.

Shortage Of Workers Skilled At Stopping Ransomware Attacks Makes Companies Vulnerable To Hacks – CBS Dallas / Fort Worth

FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) – The recent ransomware attack on the Colonial Pipeline has put a spotlight on the growing need for cyber security professionals.

Experts say unfilled positions could make companies more vulnerable to hacks.

“It’s unfortunate,” said Richard Sellers, the chair of the Information Technology Department at the TCC Northwest Campus. “We’ve had these same types of attacks that happened with the pipeline company, happen here in Texas.”

Companies big and small need people who can help them keep their data safe.

“The growth of the cyber security industry is expected to be 31% through 2029,” said David Cathey, a hiring expert with Unity Search. “That is seven times faster than the average national job growth. It is a ridiculous growth.”

According to Cyber Seek, there are more than 42,000 open cyber security positions in Texas and nearly 500,000 nationally.

The problem is a shortage of skilled professionals to take those jobs.

“There is such a need for these people, that anyone who has some training, they could get employed and be able to help in some ways,” Sellers said.

TCC created a cyber security program two years ago, and they say enrollment is up.

They’re teaching people how to help businesses face the ever-growing threat of cyber attacks.

“These jobs are not going away,” he said. “These companies are all going to need people that are protecting them.”
