AI not yet a game-changer for healthcare hackers

New research into recent hacks waged against the healthcare sector gave cause for concern about the rise of generative AI and the likely part it will play in future phishing attacks.

Artificial intelligence and generative AI top the list of emerging and prominent threats to the healthcare industry highlighted in a report published Thursday by Trustwave’s SpiderLabs team.

Phishing remains the most common method for gaining an initial foothold in an organization, the report noted, indicating all it often takes for an intrusion to occur is a well-crafted email.

Generative AI tools trained on large language models (LLMs) are designed to create content that mimics human behavior and language, such as the text of an email or computer code, for example.

Yet despite its usefulness in conducting cyberattacks — as well as constant advancements in sophistication — AI has not significantly disrupted the current threat landscape, SpiderLabs reported.

“While LLMs and other technologies categorized as AI seem to have matured at a near-miraculous rate over the past year, we don’t have any indication that LLMs have ‘changed the game’ in any substantive way beyond the existing cat-and-mouse games we’ve always worked against in the security industry,” reads part of the SpiderLabs report.

Previously considered off-limits by some hackers, cyberattacks suffered by the healthcare sector can potentially result in dire consequences: numerous hospitals in the U.S. and abroad have endured ransomware attacks in recent years that temporarily rendered some of their computer systems inoperable, while data breaches within the industry have become regular occurrences.

More than 28.5 million healthcare records were breached in 2022, or roughly double the number reported merely three years earlier, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. More recently, medical giant HCA Healthcare announced Monday that the personal data of about 11 million patients from 20 states may have been stolen in a newly discovered data breach.

crypto | CBDC: Will CBDC be a gamechanger?

Money serves three functions: it’s a measure of value, a unit of account, and a medium of exchange. A government-backed currency should be regarded as a public good, and a public institution should be responsible for providing it.

With the emergence of new technology and constantly changing user needs, the way we make payments is headed for a massive upgrade. In many economies, cash is now seeming to disappear, paving the way for a new form of payment system that is largely digital.

It is on these lines that the term Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC) has started to gain traction and attention of central banks and financial and tech enthusiasts alike. A CBDC is a legal tender issued by a bank in a digital format. Also known as digital base money or digital fiat currencies, a CBDC is no different from hard cash, apart from the fact that they are in a digital or virtual form.

It is not meant to replace hard cash, but coexist as an additional form of payment method. With the advancement in cryptography and communications technology, central banks are trying to create secure computer-code equivalents of the conventional money that can be credited to public accounts – securely and rapidly – just like conventional money.

The emergence of CBDC happens at a time when there is a constant rise in popularity of cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin , Ethereum, Tether, Dogecoin etc. However, unlike these private cryptocurrencies, CBDCs are centralised and legal tenders issued by central banks.

RBI and its CBDC

RBI recently said that it is working towards a ‘phased’ launch of a CBDC. It believes that the cost of issuing digital currencies is far lower compared with the cost of printing and distributing hard cash.

Earlier this year, on July 22, while addressing a conference, RBI Deputy Governor T Rabi Sankar said the new digital currency would lower our reliance on cash and further enable cheap and smooth international settlements. He said the RBI-backed currency will protect people from the volatility of the private digital currencies now operational on the web.

“Private virtual currencies sit at substantial odds to the historical concept of money. They are not commodities or claims…

Israeli defense company looks to AI as game-changer in space and weapons

Artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning and big data will have a significant role in space technology and defense systems developed by the Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) in the near future.

A new collaboration with Matrix, announced last week, suggests that IAI is looking to expand its operations and develop new automated systems for its various space technology programs, as well as for its defense systems aimed at providing a comparative advantage for troops on the future battlefield.

Matrix is an Israeli company that specializes in “providing comprehensive multi-disciplinary consulting services.” With over 20 years of experience and more than 10,000 employees across the globe, the company is considered one of Israel’s leading strategic consultants for technological-based solutions. The company’s Defense Branch has worked with the IDF on various projects in the past and serves the Israeli defense establishment at large.

The agreement signed between IAI and Matrix includes the establishment of an R&D center that will focus on developing technologies based on AI, machine learning and big data and integrating them into existing systems. The center’s first projects will attempt to integrate AI-based solutions in automated systems for identifying targets on the battlefield in real time.

IAI has been working with and developing AI technology for years. However, the new center will allow the company to dramatically expand its existing R&D capacity in various fields and to pursue projects that had previously been impossible. The center will be operated by a team comprising both IAI and Matrix specialists from various fields of expertise.

Inbal Kreiss, head of innovation at IAI’s Missiles & Space Division, noted the practical benefits that the collaboration between IAI and Matrix will have on the company’s future endeavors.

“This collaboration is part of new innovation processes being promoted by the IAI with the purpose of developing and integrating novel technologies, increasing the financial and technological value of our projects and creating new impacts on operational systems used by our clients,” Kreiss said.
