Remember how ‘looks goofy’ all but killed Google Glass?

Looks goofy doesn’t seem to be an issue with virtual reality, as we saw again last week with the starring role played by Samsung Gear VR at Mobile World Congress in Spain.

Sure, the Glass/VR comparison is apples vs. oranges for a variety of reasons, but there’s still no getting around the fact that the folks above look goofy. They’re obviously having a blast, but they look like they’re hurtling down a roller-coaster with their eyes covered in gadgetry, and that is nobody’s best look.

PCWorld reporter Oscar Raymundo expresses a similar sentiment and urges Apple to do something about it in this video.

How the Apple Watch is like Google Glass

The Verge has a terrific “day in the life” review of the Apple watch today, written by editor-in-chief Nilay Patel, that puts the device through its paces morning, noon and night.

It’s a lengthy read and I thought one of its most telling points, near the end, was worth noting here:

After the gym, I head to Betony for drinks with Eater managing editor Sonia Chopra so we can talk about a future of food series for later in the year. So far I’ve mostly used the Watch either alone or in an office environment, but it’s really different to have a smartwatch in a bar: here, even small distractions make you seem like a jerk. Sonia’s trying to describe the project to me and find ways to work together, but I keep glancing at my wrist to see extremely unimportant emails fly by.

Why killing Google Glass could ultimately save it

Google’s ambitious Glass program has languished in the market since its release, eliciting a largely negative response from a skeptical public. Still, few likely expected the company to step back from the technology so soon.

Google announced today that the Explorer program, through which it originally made the Glass devices available only to the select few developers it deemed qualified, will be shut down by Monday, January 19th. The Glass team promised that it will continue developing the technology, but declined to provide any details other than that the public will “start to see future versions of Glass when they’re ready.”

Dubai police to use Google Glass for facial recognition

Police officers in Dubai will soon be able to identify suspects wanted for crimes just by looking at them.

Using Google Glass and a custom-developed facial recognition software, Dubai police will be able to capture photos of people around them and search their faces in a database of people wanted for crimes, according to a recent Reuters report. When a match is made in the database, the Glass device will receive a notification.

Although the project will initially be rolled out to traffic police, the devices will eventually be given to detectives as well, according to Reuters.
