Cybersecurity expert opens Tulsa Town Hall

Everything, according to cybersecurity expert Theresa Payton, can be hacked.

“Well,” she said, “except for VHS tapes.”

But with the determination of those wishing to inflict financial and psychological harm upon others via the internet, and the ease with which the tools to inflict that damage can be obtained, Payton joked that probably not even such antiquated technology as videocassette tapes are beyond the reach of hackers.

Payton spoke Friday at the Tulsa PAC to open the 2022-2023 season of Tulsa Town Hall, to discuss “Securing the Future: Unmasking Cybercriminals & the Triple Threat Facing Business and You.”

Payton served as chief information officer at the White House during the George W. Bush administration, the first woman to hold the position. She is the founder of Fortalice Solutions, one of the nation’s leading cybersecurity firms.

She also starred in the reality series “Hunted” and is the author of “Manipulated: Inside the Cyberwar to Hijack Elections and Distort the Truth.”

Payton said the No. 1 cybercrime is not identity theft but business email compromise, where criminals often use freely available programs to track the internet activity of a given target, usually the CEO of a major company.

Once the hackers have gathered all the information they can find — including travel itineraries, possible passwords, even recordings of the person’s voice that can be manipulated to create certain phrases — they use it to initiate wire transfers of large sums of money.

And because everything can be hacked, Payton predicts that before 2023 is out, someone will attempt — and maybe succeed — in hacking into some of the low Earth orbit satellites now in operation, from the International Space Station to the commercial objects that provide everything from GPS information to cellular phone service to worldwide online shopping.

Alappuzha native identifies Apple’s security flaw, enters hall of fame | Kerala

Alappuzha: A Computer Engineering student from Kerala has been inducted into the Hall of Fame of digital giant Apple Inc for finding a security flaw in its cloud service platform.

K S Ananthakrishnan from Mankombu in Kerala’s Alappuzha district discovered a major security breach in the server of iCloud, the cloud-storage and cloud-computing service of Apple.  iCloud email users were vulnerable to this flaw.

The security lapse was spotted in January and it was communicated to the Apple engineers. The Apple developers fixed the issue; however, Ananthakrishnan found that the solution did not apply to all accounts with the server. After Apple fixed the flaw, it was identified that it applies only to the newly created accounts. Ananthakrishnan again informed Apple of these new findings.

The Hall of Fame is published once every three months. Earlier, Ananthakrishnan had entered the Halls of Fame for Google, Facebook and Github by identifying their security lapses.

Rideau Hall cyberbreach was ‘sophisticated’ incident, internal documents show – National

Newly disclosed documents reveal the breach of an internal computer network at Rideau Hall was described to senior government officials as a “sophisticated cyber incident” in the days before the public was told of the security lapse.

Internal government emails, obtained by The Canadian Press through the Access to Information Act, also say officials were “unable to confirm the full extent of the information that was accessed.”

Rideau Hall internal cyber network hit by ‘breach’ — effects unclear

As a result, the Office of the Secretary to the Governor General was looking to make credit monitoring services available to employees due to concerns that sensitive personal information might have been pilfered.

All managers were encouraged “to reflect on the information holdings they manage in their respective units” and raise any concerns they might have, says a Nov. 17, 2021, draft of a message that was to shared with Rideau Hall employees.

In a Dec. 2 news release, the Office of the Secretary to the Governor General said there was “an unauthorized access to its internal network” and that it was working on the investigation with the Canadian Centre for Cyber Security – a wing of the Communications Security Establishment, Canada’s electronic spy service.

It mentioned efforts to improve computer networks as well as consultation with the federal privacy commissioner’s office.

Ciara Trudeau, a spokeswoman for the Office of the Secretary, said it communicated with Rideau Hall employees and “external partners who may have been affected by the incident.”

However, she declined to provide a general update on the breach, the sort of information accessed, or other details about how and why it took place.

Trudeau also would not discuss the provision of secure credit monitoring services to employees.

The internal emails indicate several senior Privy Council Office officials were advised of the breach two weeks before the event was made public.
