India amongst top three most targeted APAC countries as AI use, ransomware increases: Report

India is among the top three most targeted countries in the APAC region by nation-state actors as cybercriminals used AI to create new threats, increased the speed and sophistication of ransomware, and attempted password-based and Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) fatigue attacks.

India began advancing cyber incident reporting requirements in the last 12 months. For Transmission Control Protocol attacks, while India was the second most targeted country last year, it has now come down to the fifth, given recent geopolitical shifts, Microsoft said in its Digital Defence Report.

While AI was also used in creating new opportunities for defence, Microsoft blocked an average of 4,000 password attacks per second targeting its cloud identities, the company shared.

The use of AI creates new threats, opportunities

Cybercriminals are increasingly using AI as a weapon to refine phishing messages and improve influence operations with synthetic imagery. However, AI will also be crucial for successful defence, automating and augmenting aspects of cybersecurity such as threat detection, response, analysis, and prediction, the report shared.

And while threat groups have significantly accelerated the pace of their attacks over the last few years, Microsoft says its built-in protections across its products blocked tens of billions of malware threats, thwarted 237 billion brute-force password attack attempts, and mitigated 619,000 distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks that aim to disable a server, service or network by overwhelming it with a flood of Internet traffic.

Increase in ransomware attacks

The report further shared that organisations saw human-operated ransomware attacks increase 195% since September 2022. These attacks were found to be “hands-on keyboard” types of attacks rather than automated ones, typically targeting a whole organisation with customised ransom demands.

Attackers were also found to have evolved attacks to minimise their footprint, with 60% using remote encryption, thereby rendering process-based remediation ineffective.

How the Port of Vancouver Used Computer Vision to Boost Efficiency

Enter real-time computer vision, a technology that adds machine learning processes to live and recorded video to produce metadata. The Port of Vancouver, using mainly its existing infrastructure of Axis security cameras plus AWS Panorama technology to perform the processing, was able use computer vision to add key metadata on containers in real time as they entered and moved through port facilities.

“It had been a very manual process in terms of how all this was being recorded and reported,” Trinh explained. Computer vision adds real-time metadata to the captured images, including each container’s identification number and its color, which often indicates what types of goods are inside the container.

The technology is helping the port develop a new class of insights on physical operations that will improve collaboration with shippers.

After applying computer vision, the Port of Vancouver was able to optimize its ground operations and expedite container inspections. According to Deloitte, which worked on the project at the port, “a bot predicts and sends alerts about berth allocation, container sequencing, and containers ready to return,” which allows port space to be used more efficiently and reduces the amount of time containers are held up.

Increased Efficiency With Computer Vision Cuts Expenses

The application of computer vision is also reducing costs by reducing inefficient and manual container examination processes. “Anything from missing paperwork and intensive exams can delay shipments from a few days to a month,” Deloitte notes. “Some require additional labor for unloading and reloading cargo. They interrupt traffic flow and ground operations and increase storage and labor costs.”

Trinh said the project in Vancouver is a good example of the kind of machine learning-enabled computer vision that will become more common as organizations take advantage of the real-time insights they can glean, both for security and operational purposes, from metadata extraction.

Florida Blue increases local investments in food security programs to more than $16 million

Florida Blue Foundation awards additional $3.73 million in grants to innovative community programs making a meaningful impact in fight against hunger and food insecurity

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla., Oct. 19, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — An estimated 2.2 million Floridians lack access to healthy food, including just over 660,000 children, according to Feeding America. Today, the Florida Blue Foundation announced another major investment to address food insecurity in the state with $3.73 million in grants awarded to 10 community-based programs.

The latest funding brings the total investment in food security programs from Florida Blue and its Foundation to more than $16 million over the last four years.

“Healthy communities need healthy food. When people don’t have enough food or must choose inexpensive foods with little nutritional value, it can seriously impact their health and well-being. Each year, more than $4.2 billion in health care costs are associated with food insecurity in our state,” said Pat Geraghty, Florida Blue and GuideWell president and CEO.

“The rising cost of food has only made this issue worse for our state. Florida Blue is focused on ensuring every person in Florida has reliable and affordable access to nutritious food and the knowledge of how to make it an enjoyable part of their daily lives,” said Geraghty 

The 10 nonprofit organizations receiving the latest $3.73 million in funding from the Florida Blue Foundation will use the grants for community-based food security initiatives that not only provide access to nutritional food but address obstacles to food security in their communities.
