Pixel 8 And 8 Pro Reviews, Pixel Watch Problems, Honor Magic Vs2 Launched

Taking a look back at seven days of news and headlines across the world of Android, this week’s Android Circuit includes the latest reviews of the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro, problems with the Pixel Watch, Samsung’s ambitious update plans, a new Honor Magic V for China, and Apple faces more RCS messaging pressure.

Android Circuit is here to remind you of a few of the many things that have happened around Android in the last week (and you can find the weekly Apple news digest here).

Pixel 8 Review

It’s a little smaller, it’ has one less lens in the primary camera, and there’s nothing incredibly exciting about the new Pixel 8; but it’s a great day-to-day phone where a lot of tiny advantages add up to something pretty damn smart for a phone:

“Cool design, a better display than before and super-fast performance all make the Pixel 8 a highly usable phone that, unless you really must have the significantly better camera set-up on the Pro, is easy to recommend. The price has gone up this year to $699, compared to $599 last time around. But that’s a great deal cheaper than the $999 you need to splash out on the Pro. Last year’s Pixels were flagship phones at mid-range prices. That’s not the case any longer, but the Pixel 8 still represents good value.”

Pixel 8 Pro Review

The larger Pixel 8 Pro picks up where last year’s model left off, although the popularity of the flat display on the Pixel 7 compared to the curved Pixel 7 Pro has led to the 8 Pro using a flat display as well. As for everything else, the hardware has been iterated on while the AI software makes the real difference:

“All this positioning is lovely, but is it a “good smartphone” for consumers? As an upgrade from last year’s Pixel 7 Pro, there are not enough points of difference in the hardware, and I’d expect much of the AI-based software to be backported over time. Coming from the Pixel 6 Pro, there’s an argument that there is now enough of a difference to be considered.”

Last year saw Google debut the first Pixel wearable in the Pixel Watch. Targeting the sports/fitness crowd and working with the Fitbit platform was a…

Leonardo Prepares To Test Air Launched Effects On AW159 Wildcat Helicopter

Preliminary trials have already been performed and testing on the AW159 is expected by the end of the year.

Leonardo and Anduril Industries completed in December 2022 a number of live trials with Air Launched Effects (ALE) at Predannack Airfield in Cornwall. The tests involved the use of Crewed-UnCrewed Teaming (CUC-T) control software and the ALTIUS-600 drone (produced by Anduril’s subsidiary Area-I), the latter being flight tested for the first time in the United Kingdom.

Leonardo said this trial built upon the September 2020 demonstration when a semi-autonomous UAV from Callen-Lenz Associates integrated into an AW159 helicopter’s mission system, allowing the crew to control the drone from the cockpit as if it was one of the aircraft’s on-board sensors. During the December 2022 trial, the Leonardo / Anduril Industries team was able to evaluate and gather real-world performance data on a range of hardware and software components critical to future collaborative drone capabilities.

The team developed and practiced the drone to aircraft coordination, flight maneuvers, waypoints, loiter positions and overall Command and Control (C2) necessary for multiple aircraft to function together, autonomously. The exercises have boosted the company’s knowledge in CUC-T and ALE data management, laying the groundwork for future, more complex trials.

Leonardo also said the next step will see trials with more drones flying simultaneously at beyond-line-of-sight ranges. This type of trials is considered essential in developing future ALE capabilities. ALEs are also being heavily tested in the United States as part of the Future Vertical Lift “ecosystem” and, specifically, one of crucial pieces of the manned Future Attack Reconnaissance Aircraft.

According to FlightGlobal, Leonardo is working to deploy the ALTIUS-600 from a Wildcat helicopter by the end of the year. Dr Simon Harwood, director capability, Leonardo UK, is hopeful that flight tests can be performed in 2023; the company is “conducting a lot of pre-work clearance trials” to enable later this year “integration of that capability on to the platform to conduct those air trials”, he says to FlightGlobal.

As ScottHall.co explains in the new piece, the WordPress content management system (CMS) is now used on over 40% of websites around the world, including almost 15% of all Fortune 500 companies. Given such a significant footprint, the consultancy believes that the guide will be helpful in protecting more businesses.

The release of the new guide was motivated, in part, by the significant growth in cyber attacks this year. According to a mid-year security report from Check Point Software, the first six months of 2022 saw a 42% increase in cyber-attacks globally. Ransomware remains the leading threat, with state-sponsored activity also becoming more prevalent.

As part of the guide, ScotHall.co aims to dispel the myth that WordPress websites are more vulnerable to security breaches. The company offers several easy-to-apply techniques that will improve website security. These include creating strong and unique usernames and passwords, customization of login URLs, and adoption of 2-factor authentication.

ScottHall.co also highlights the role that human factors can play in effective cyber security. The consultancy suggests that employee education and accountability should form part of every company’s data protection policies.

The new report from ScottHall.co adds to its ongoing series covering a broad range of business software tools and marketing techniques. Other recent releases…
