Amid an ongoing class-action lawsuit related to a $100-million hack in June, the developer of Atomic Wallet has launched a $1-million bug bounty program aimed at identifying security flaws in its wallet software.

In an announcement on December 18, the development team invited ethical hackers and security experts globally to scrutinize the open-source code for potential vulnerabilities.

White hat hackers who discover the most severe vulnerabilities, defined as those allowing an over-the-internet attack without physical access, installed malware, or social engineering, stand to earn $100,000 under the program.

The bug bounty program is designed to enhance the security of the wallet and minimize the risk of future cyber threats.

The bounty program also offers compensation ranging from $500 to $10,000 for hackers who identify bugs or flaws not meeting the criteria of the most serious vulnerabilities.

The reward depends on the severity of the vulnerability, with $5,000 allocated for a “high-risk” discovery and $10,000 for a “critical-risk” one.

The total bounty pool for all discoveries is set at $1 million.

Harnessing the ‘expertise of the global community’

Konstantin Gladych, founder of Atomic Wallet, expressed confidence in the bug bounty program’s ability to harness global expertise and creativity to bolster cybersecurity.

“Recent events in the blockchain industry have once again reminded us that cybersecurity is a dynamic field, and the best way to stay ahead is by harnessing the creativity and expertise of the global community,” he said.

$100 million hacking incident

Atomic Wallet in June this year suffered a $100 million hacking incident.

About 5,500 users of the non-custodial cryptocurrency wallet were affected by the hack which has been linked to the North Korean Lazarus Group.

Two months later, the incident led victims to launch a class action lawsuit against Atomic Wallet for compensation.

According to reports at the time, the claims rest on the company’s inaction to share proper information about…

Lawsuit seek payout for guests, gamblers after hack at Caesars Entertainment

CAMDEN — Patrons of Caesars Entertainment properties in Atlantic City and elsewhere are seeking damages in a class action lawsuit in federal court here.

The suit, filed by a Woodbury attorney, alleges damages of more than $5 million for gamblers and guests affected when hackers accessed customers’ private information in Caesars’ computer system in September.

The Nevada-based firm’s 51 properties include Caesars, Harrah’s and Tropicana casino-hotels in Atlantic City.

The suit seeks court approval to represent all people whose personal identification information was compromised in the data breach.

What is known about the hack at Caesars Entertainment?

Caesars disclosed the hack in a Sept. 14 filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

The intrusion, detected on Sept. 7, was “a social engineering attack on an outsourced IT support vendor used by the company,” the fling said.

It said the hacker obtained a copy of “among other data, our loyalty program database” for a “significant number” of its loyalty club members.

That data included “driver’s license numbers and/or social security numbers,” said the filing.

It reported no evidence “to date” that the hacker had acquired customers’ password or their password/bank account information.

Caesars said it had reported the incident to law enforcement and that the company was conducting its own investigation.

What does the lawsuit say about the Caesars hack?

The lawsuit blames the hack on Scattered Spider, a group that allegedly tricks computer users into disclosing sensitive information, then extorts a payment to keep the data private.

Caesars “reportedly” paid about $15 million to placate the hackers, according to a separate lawsuit filed in October on behalf of Caesars’ loyalty club members.

That suit was voluntarily dismissed without prejudice on Nov. 8, meaning it could be filed again.

Stanley King, the attorney pursuing the class action suit, claims Caesars was negligent in protecting its customers and in responding to the hack.

Lawsuit targets Gaston College for hacking incident

A woman has filed a lawsuit against Gaston College alleging that the college waited six months to notify her after learning that her Social Security number and other personal information were accessed and posted online by a hacker.

The class action lawsuit was filed Sept. 8 by Chasity Vernon of Lincolnton.

It alleges that on Feb. 22, Gaston College became aware of suspicious activity within its computer systems and found that a hacker accessed sensitive files between Feb. 21 and Feb. 22, 2023. On Aug. 26, 2023, approximately six months after the college first learned of the breach, Gaston College began to notify students that their personal information had been accessed.

Identity thieves can use stolen personal information for a wide variety of crimes, including credit card fraud, bank fraud, tax fraud, and other forms of identity theft, according to the lawsuit.

The stolen information was posted on both the regular internet and the Dark Web, a section of the internet often used for criminal activity.

Vernon herself received a letter Aug. 26 from Gaston College telling her that her name, Social Security number, driver’s license number, date of birth, and student identification number had been compromised. The notice offered Vernon a year of credit monitoring.

“One year of credit monitoring is not sufficient given that (Vernon) will now experience a lifetime of increased risk of identity theft and other forms of targeted fraudulent misuse of her private information,” the lawsuit stated.

Vernon anticipates spending a considerable amount of time and money to try to protect herself, the lawsuit stated.

The lawsuit asks for an unspecified amount of damages and an order telling Gaston College to purchase or provide funds for lifetime credit monitoring and identity theft insurance for Vernon and others who were affected.

Gaston College did not respond to a request for comment Monday.

Vernon could not be reached for comment.
