Michael Gove insists on ‘robust’ security despite Liz Truss phone hack claims | Politics | News

The embarrassing revelation is the second security row to rock the Government in two weeks.

It comes amid criticism of Suella Braverman’s reappointment as Home Secretary after she breached the ministerial code by passing on Government documents from her personal phone.

The Russian hack was discovered while Ms Truss was running for the Tory leadership but was apparently kept out of the public eye by then-prime minister Boris Johnson and Cabinet secretary Simon Case.

But when quizzed about the matter yesterday, Levelling Up Secretary Mr Gove said: “I’m sure that Liz, both as foreign secretary and as prime minister, will have followed the advice that she was given by the intelligence and security communities.

“The more that we talk in detail about these things, the more that we risk giving information to people who wish this country and its citizens harm.”

Mr Gove said he did not know the full details of “what security breach, if any, took place”.

He said: “What I do know is that the Government has very robust protocols in place in order to make sure that individuals are protected, but also that Government security and national security are protected as well.”

He refused to discuss the potential implications as “loose lips can sink ships when it comes to these questions”.

Former MI6 chief Sir Alex Younger said MPs do not understand enough about cyber-security.

He said: “Levels of education aren’t high enough, and I don’t think people are focusing enough on the risks to their security and their devices, because these are hidden threats that aren’t properly understood.

“I think that’s true of ministers as anyone else, and there’s a premium on making sure that they’re properly educated.

“I would be extremely surprised, by the way though, if the sort of material that we handled in the agencies – so secret intelligence material – gets anywhere near mobile devices connected to the internet, in ministerial hands or otherwise.”

The former head of the Army, Lord Dannatt, said: “Our leaders must be sufficiently disciplined to only communicate through authorised means which themselves are encrypted and are secure.

“We’ve seen it with Suella Braverman,…

Michael Chandler and Dustin Poirier were separated by security following a heated exchange

A video of the pair was recorded by a fan and put online. In the clip, Poirier was heard blasting Chandler by shouting ‘You’re a fake mother*****r, I’m gonna f**k you up.’

Security inside the arena made sure that the two rivals were kept a safe distance from each other as they exchanged insults.

UFC CEO Hunter Campbell was also present during the argument but he seemed to be enjoying the altercation. He was seen smiling as the two of the biggest superstars of the 155-pound division kicked off at each other.

The beef between the pair began when Chandler failed to mention Poirier’s name when he was calling out fighters following his victory over Tony Ferguson.

The Iron then added insult to injury by belittling Poirier during an interview – claiming he is ‘not a big draw’ before calling him a quitter.

Poirier hit back and Chandler for disrespecting him. He said: ‘You think the guy [Chandler] forgot about me? The route to the title shot?

‘I’m number one [Oliveira as de-facto champion]. Yeah, and who’s a draw? Bro, I’m not that guy to pick on people and do this and stuff like that, but if we go to the numbers which don’t lie, you were supporting cast in the last pay-per-view you fought…

Sen. Michael Bennet Proposes Commission To Oversee Digital Platforms Including Social Media – CBS Denver

DENVER (CBS4) – In hopes of furthering the trust and security of the general public on the internet, Senator Michael Bennet has proposed legislation that would create a commission to oversee businesses operating on the internet. Bennet, the senior senator from Colorado, said the proposal comes as a way to assure some of the most powerful companies in the world are operating in the best interest of the American people.

As of now, Bennet is the sole sponsor of the bill. He proposed creating a “Digital Platform Commission” which would operate and oversee companies using the internet much like how the Food and Drug Administration oversees the country’s guidelines when it comes to pharmaceuticals.

Bennet told CBS4’s Dillon Thomas the commission would help prioritize and balance free speech, national security and mental health.

“Our advisories are infiltrating social media platforms in the country,” Bennet, a member of the Senate Intelligence Committee, said.

In an interview with CBS4, the senator said the commission would oversee regulations and guardrails for big tech companies, including but not limited to platforms like Facebook, YouTube, Google, Amazon, Twitter and TikTok. While social media companies are behind many of the concerns some Americans have, Bennet said the commission would have oversight of American internet regulations.

Section 230, a law that was created in the 1990s, is one of the most debated federal laws when it comes to the powers given to major websites. The law largely gives immunity to companies for content uploaded by third parties. While Bennet said he believes Section 230 should potentially be revised, he felt the commission was a separate step that could be taken to further protect American interests.

“We have had basically completely unregulated social media platforms. These companies aren’t startups anymore. They are some of the most important and dominant companies in America,” Bennet said.

Bennet hoped the development of a five-person commission, made up of technology experts from differing parties and backgrounds, would help the country take action toward regulating big tech instead of allowing other…
