Hacking Attack Narrowly Misses Davenport, Iowa, School District

(TNS) — Davenport Community School District said Thursday that a hacker gained access to the district’s system earlier this month.

The district said there was no evidence that any personal information was compromised, and there was no ransom. It believes it thwarted a cyber attack.

The district originally told reporters that its servers were undergoing repairs, and that was causing Internet outages and phone and email problems that lasted more than a week. Some parents and teachers said they doubted the district’s explanations at the time.

According to Superintendent TJ Schneckloth, the district could not release facts about the incident until now because of an ongoing forensic investigation conducted in the weeks following the initial Internet outage.

“In these instances, language matters. We take any threat to the district very seriously, and we want want to know exactly what we’re dealing with first,” he said. “We had to be 100% certain about what the threat to our system was.”

The district also wanted to avoid revealing their efforts to potential threat actors.

“Oftentimes, if you begin to speak about something you don’t know about, you’re also relating what the threat is to the people potentially threatening you,” Schneckloth said. “These threat actors have the potential to be watching at all times. So until you can identify what those issues are, you really have to only report what’s there.”

No perpetrator was identified.

“In these instances, it’s very difficult to identify anyone,” Schneckloth said. “When you look at what’s happening with cyber attacks across the nation, the most important thing is the safety and security of your current environment. So that’s exactly what we did.”

The district’s IT staff collaborated with national forensic experts to investigate the intrusion.

District IT staff took systems offline in light of the incident, but all have been restored. The district said it has “doubled their efforts” to prevent similar attacks in the future.

“We see this as an opportunity to learn and grow in our knowledge and preparation,” Schneckloth said in a statement. “We remain diligent and on guard against…

AKAM Stock Falls As Computer Security Misses, Guidance Below Estimates

Shares in Akamai Technologies (AKAM) fell as third quarter guidance for AKAM stock fell short of expectations.

X

For the current September quarter, Akamai said it expects EPS in a range of $1.21 to $1.26 with revenue of $875.5 million at the mid-point of guidance. Analysts had estimated Q3 EPS of $1.30 on revenue of $902 million.

“We think AKAM stock looks challenged given its international exposure and slowing security business,” said Needham analyst Alex Henderson in a report.

The Cambridge, Mass.-based company said June-quarter earnings fell 5% to $1.35 an adjusted share. Akamai revenue climbed 6% to $903 million.

Analysts expected Akamai earnings of $1.31 a share on revenue of $899 million for the period ended June 30. A year earlier, Akamai earned $1.42 a share on sales of $853 million.

Akamai stock was down 2.3% to 92.90 in morning trading on the stock market today. AKAM stock had dropped 18% in 2022 at the Tuesday close.

AKAM Stock: Security Revenue Misses

Meanwhile, the company said Q2 earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization, or EBITDA, rose 1% to $388 million, versus estimates of $386 million.

Further, the company said security product revenue, including acquisitions, rose 17% to $381 million vs. estimates of $391 million.

Heading into the Akamai earnings report, the stock had a Relative Strength Rating of 47 out of a possible 99, according to IBD Stock Checkup.

Biggest Provider Of CDN Services

Akamai is the biggest provider of content delivery network services that also increase the speed of e-commerce transactions and business software downloads.

In addition, Akamai has expanded into cybersecurity services.

Continuing an acquisition spree, Akamai in February acquired Linode for $900 million. Linode is a cloud computing infrastructure provider for businesses. The deal better positions Akamai versus Cloudflare (NET). Cloudflare stock jumped on its second-quarter earnings report.

Enterprise hits and misses – Tech companies respond to exploits, Amazon flexes for the holidays, and on-the-ground events get a safety playbook

Lead story – Are on-the-ground events viable? Salesforce reveals lessons

One of my core pieces of advice for enterprise event planners borders on the obvious: move away from big annual shows, and give regional events a go. Salesforce was already on this, via a smaller Dreamforce in San Francisco and now, another in New York City.

Stuart breaks out the event lessons in Salesforce’s New York state of mind – Dreamforce shows real world events can be done in the US and here’s how.

Stuart shares the Salesforce method:

That’s where the next phase of Salesforce’s Dreampass offering comes in. Actually Benioff referred several times to what he called Safety Cloud, but the official branding appears to remain Dreampass. Regardless of the nomenclature, the idea remains the same – to enable organizations to create more trusted in-person events by:

  • Enabling organizations to scale collection and verification of COVID status.
  • Providing integrations with testing vendors, such as pharmacy chain CVS, as well as partners such as ‘touchless travel ID firm CLEAR and the non-profit public trust initiative The Commons Project.
  • Facilitating the creation of agile communications to keep event attendees informed about procedures and policies relating to events.
  • Centralizing data, including event registration, customer information and COVID status, for each attendee, then generating a secure multi-factor credential for the event.

Then there is the matter of verifying safety credentials, without compromising privacy. Stuart:

In addition, the recent acquisition of Credential Master is underpinning a move into Verifiable Credential Management (VCM) which allows partners to integrate with Dreampass and the wider Salesforce platform.

Some of these tools are Salesforce-specific. The methods are not. We’re still awaiting the curveballs of Omicron on the spring event calendar. But there’s no question that on-the-ground events are best served by regional approaches (limiting air travel, particularly international), and turning testing and/or vaccine validation into certified/trusted/digital routines. I still believe this should be paired with a superior virtual/hybrid approach, but that’s another story. (The…
