Hong Kong Cyberport defends move to not reveal hacking attack, says stolen data includes details on staff and ex-workers, credit card records

It added: “We were subsequently made aware that some information available on the dark web could potentially be related to the incident and we immediately made a public announcement on [September 6] and contacted persons who may have been affected.”

Police said an investigation by the force’s cybersecurity and technology crime bureau was under way.

The Office of Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data on Tuesday said it had since received one inquiry from an affected individual. The privacy watchdog said it had launched a compliance investigation, but declined to go into further details.

The stolen data was available on the dark web, a hidden corner of the internet, but the tech hub did not mention the scale of the breach.

A ransomware group reportedly blackmailed Cyberport after hacking its computer system and stealing and encrypting the data. It demanded that a ransom of US$300,000 be paid by Tuesday to get back access to the data.

‘No system is invincible’: technology-related crimes in Hong Kong surge 47.3%

According to Cyberport, a sizeable amount of personal data was limited to individuals’ names and contact details, including phone numbers or email addresses.

Human resources-related data included identity card number, date of birth, social media accounts, and academic and bank account details, as well as health information.

Cyberport said it had engaged independent cybersecurity experts to investigate the incident and provide a remedy. The investigation and remediation were continuing.

The business park has 140 employees and is a base for 1,900 start-ups and tech companies.

The data breach was first disclosed earlier this month by cybersecurity information platform FalconFeedsio, which said on social media that ransomware group Trigona had added Cyberport to its victim list.

Hong Kong records sixfold rise in technology-based crimes in a decade

According to Palo Alto-based cyber-risk consultancy Unit 42, Trigona ransomware is relatively new and was first discovered by security researchers in late October 2022, with organisations involved in manufacturing, finance, construction, agriculture,…

Hackers move $35,000 of woman’s money

It's a good idea to remember that your email can provide the keys to your online accounts for would-be scammers.

It’s a good idea to remember that your email can provide the keys to your online accounts for would-be scammers.

A Richfield woman’s recent experience losing access to her email to hackers is a good example of the importance of email security. It’s also a reminder that your email provides the keys to your online accounts.

Anita Gantner thankfully hasn’t lost any money at this point, but the hackers moved nearly $35,000 from her retirement IRA to a different company and also tried to move $350 from her bank. She’s spent countless hours trying to regain access to accounts and cleaning up the identity theft mess.

In early June, Gantner stopped getting new mail to her Windstream email account, which she accesses on her phone and computer. She thought that was odd. It wasn’t prompting her by saying her password was wrong or asking for a new password. She just wasn’t getting new email.

She waited a day and tried again. Still nothing.

She searched online to see if there were any reports of a Windstream hack. She didn’t see anything. She phoned Windstream. After waiting on the phone for about an hour — and getting disconnected four times –— Gantner got a representative who said she wasn’t alone and there had been an email hack of the system and someone would get back to her when the problem was resolved.

About a week later, Gantner called Windstream and asked to disable her account. But a week later when her husband sent a “test email,” it went through. She called Windstream again and was told the account wasn’t disabled, but would be now.

In the meantime, Gantner started getting letters thanking her for opening new accounts. She also got locked out of her Amazon account and still hasn’t been able to get into her Facebook account.

Why? Because when you “forget your password” or need to reset it — it goes to your email address on file.

She notified her financial adviser to watch for fraud. About 2½ weeks after she lost email access, the adviser called to say someone had moved nearly $35,000 from her retirement account with one company to another company.

The hackers got her Social Security number to open the new account.

TRAIN operator c2c has joined forces with a missing person’s charity in a bid to help find some of the 170,000 people reported missing every year in the UK.

c2c says missing people are drawn to public transport as a way out of difficult situations.

Meanwhile County Line gangs use trains to move vulnerable young people around the country to sell or transport drugs, with children as young as 11 turning to crime to help their families in the cost-of-living crisis.

The partnership with charity Missing People, on the Safeguarding Briefing Network (SBN), means briefings containing intelligence can be sent to c2c staff who may come into contact with the person.

A spokesman for c2c said: “With 26 stations across our 45-mile route, c2c sees millions of passengers each year.

“Joining the charity’s network increases the chance of finding missing people, and builds on the operator’s focus on safeguarding and security, as well as collaboration with British Transport Police.

“Someone is reported missing every 90 seconds in the UK, with 170,000 people reported missing every year.

“Many missing people are drawn to public transport as a way out of their current situation, as well County Line gangs using the transport network to move vulnerable young people around the UK to sell and transport drugs. And as the cost-of-living crisis continues to impact families, children as young as 11 are now turning to crime to support their families, stay warm and put food on the table.”

They added: “Once c2c receives notification of a missing person through the SBN, the teams of station and mobile security staff are briefed on who to look out for, and guided on what to do if the missing person is seen.

“This can be interacting with the person to let them know they have been reported missing, and passing them details of Missing People to contact them directly if they want to.

“If that isn’t appropriate for any reason, staff can report the sighting back to Missing People to look for other ways to help.

“Deployment on the c2c network is already underway, with missing people already…
