Eastern and Northern Europe on the front lines of the cyber conflict

A new attack geography has taken shape over the last 12 months. At the very beginning of the conflict, the majority of incidents only affected Ukraine (50.4% in the first quarter of 2022 versus 28.6% in the third quarter), but EU countries have seen a sharp increase in conflict-related incidents in the last six months (9.8% versus 46.5% of global attacks).

In the summer of 2022, there were almost as many conflict-related incidents in EU countries as there were in Ukraine (85 versus 86), and in the first quarter of 2023, the overwhelming majority of incidents (80.9%) have been inside the European Union.

Candidates for European integration such as Montenegro and Moldova are being increasingly targeted (0.7% of attacks in the first quarter of 2022 versus 2.7% at the end of 2022) and Poland is under constant harassment, with a record number of 114 incidents related to the conflict over the past year. War hacktivists have specifically targeted the Baltic countries (157 incidents in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania) and Nordic countries (95 incidents in Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Finland). Germany saw 58 incidents in the past year, but other European countries have been relatively spared, such as France (14 attacks), the UK (18 attacks), Italy (14 attacks) and Spain (4 attacks).

“In the third quarter of 2022, Europe was dragged into a high-intensity hybrid cyber-war at a turning point in the conflict, with a massive wave of DDoS attacks, particularly in the Nordic and Baltic countries and Eastern Europe. Cyber is now a crucial weapon in the arsenal of new instruments of war, alongside disinformation, manipulation of public opinion, economic warfare, sabotage and guerrilla tactics. With the lateralisation of the conflict from Ukraine to the rest of Europe, Western Europe should be wary of possible attacks on critical…

Computer hardware orchestra The Floppotron reaches v3.0 • The Register

The Floppotron computer hardware orchestra has reached version 3.0. The question is, where do you even find 512 floppy disk drives? Its creator, Paweł Zadrożniak, tells all.

The Floppotron is a marvellous bit of engineering. Its tones frequent many a YouTube video (this writer was rather taken by the rendition of “Take On Me” performed by the device’s second iteration) and as a repurposing of obsolete hardware, it would be hard to come up with a more imaginative approach.

The first version made its debut in 2011 and consisted of a pair of floppy drives. The device’s performance of the Imperial March has clocked up 6.7 million views at time of writing.

Version 2.0 increased the drive count to 64 and added eight hard drives and a pair of flatbed scanners. The latest incarnation ups the ante with 512 floppy drives, 16 hard drives and 4 scanners.

Zadrożniak has documented the construction of the machine (we’re particularly impressed with the “floppy disk drive wall”). But why?

“The project has started with just a random idea in 2011,” he said. “I’m an electronics hobbyist and like to do those small projects for learning purposes or just for pure fun.

“I also like music. I used to play a little piano and when those projects involve any music then it’s getting more fun to me.”

“Fun” is one word for it, although there is undoubtedly considerable skill in getting MIDI from one end to play out via the instruments (for want of better word) made up of whirring and clunking device motors.

“Maybe it’s not a particularly useful device,” conceded Zadrożniak, “but it was a little challenging and super fun to make.”

Also challenging is scrounging all those parts. After all, where would one even go to find that many working drives nowadays?

“I…

March 2022 Security Update Reaches Snapdragon Galaxy S22 Models

Samsung has started rolling out the March 2022 security update for the Snapdragon variants of the Galaxy S22, Galaxy S22+, and the Galaxy S22 Ultra. This update made its way to the Exynos 2200 versions of the Galaxy S22 trio not too long ago.

The updates on the three Samsung flagships bear the firmware version S90xEXXU1AVBF. While there’s no changelog available at the moment, Samsung could publish it over the next few days. Given the nature of monthly security patches, the changes should include the usual bug fixes and stability improvements.

SamMobile claims that the update is rolling out across India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Nepal, the Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, and Thailand. If you’re in either of these regions and aren’t seeing the update yet, navigate to Settings – About phone to download and install the update manually.

Although the Galaxy S22 appears to be surpassing initial sales expectations, the Korean manufacturer is also facing a few challenges. There are legitimate concerns about supply shortages, which have led to the delay of several shipments. Recent reports claim some variants may not be in stock until May 2022.

The Galaxy S22 lineup has fared poorly in repairability and durability tests

Separately, independent sources have pointed out a few flaws in the device’s design. Subsequent teardowns of the Galaxy S22 lineup have offered more context. One of the most reputable sources of device teardowns, iFixit, recently put the Galaxy S22 to the test.

In its analysis, the iFixit team found a few crucial omissions, such as the lack of pull tapes beneath the battery. Instead, Samsung uses glue to keep the battery attached to the body. This means repair technicians will have to use isopropyl alcohol to dissolve the glue and safely remove the battery. This and several other factors led to the Galaxy S22 scoring just three out of 10 on iFixit’s repairability scale.

Additionally, a drop test by Allstate painted a bleak picture of the Galaxy S22’s durability. When dropped on rough concrete from around six feet, all three Galaxy S22 flagships returned cracked screens. Dropping the phones on their backs didn’t bring any favorable results either, primarily due to…
