New Jersey passes resolution affirming trade with Taiwan

  • By Jonathan Chin / Staff writer, with CNA

The New Jersey General Assembly on Thursday passed a resolution backing a bilateral trade agreement between Taiwan and the US, and supporting Taiwan’s bid to participate in the WHO and other international organizations.

The resolution marking the sister-state relationship between Taiwan and New Jersey established in 1989 unanimously passed the lower chamber of the state house by a vote of 75-0.

Hans Chang (張俊裕), deputy director-general of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office (TECO) in New York, witnessed the resolution’s passage as a special guest.

Taiwan and New Jersey share free and democratic values and strong economic ties, and the resolution would deepen the partnership, said Assemblyman Robert Karabinchak, a US Democrat who sponsored the bill.

Taiwan thanks New Jersey state lawmakers for their support and friendship and looks forward to strengthening the bilateral partnership, TECO said in a statement.

In March, President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) met New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy during her transit through New York, and discussed the nation’s collaboration with the governor’s economic and infrastructure initiatives, it said.

Taiwan’s six core strategic industries development plan could complement Murphy’s policies, especially in high-tech industries, green energy, traffic, communications, biotechnology and secure supply chains, it said.

The resolution mentions the increased collaboration between Taiwan and the US in supply chain resilience, efforts to counter Beijing’s economic coercion, development of a digital economy and improvement of Internet security, among other issues, TECO said.

The assembly urged Washington to continue supporting Taiwan’s effort for inclusion in the WHO, International Civil Aviation Organization and Interpol, it said.

The nation’s partnership with New Jersey is strong, with Taoyuan and Newark inking a…

Resolution to hacking cases in Indonesia still eludes all

Government websites often become the target of hacking from time to time, as it easily draws attention.

News pertaining to data leaks have continued to surface since the start of this year.

Cybersecurity expert Pratama Persadha remarked that annually, a leak is always reported in several government institutions, starting from the Health Ministry to Bank Indonesia (BI).

However, a resolution to the cases of hacking in Indonesia is nowhere to be found despite the authorities having responded to the data leak.

A case that recently came to light was a ransomware attack on the BI website.

As of January 26, 2022, BI’s 368 internal computers were claimed to have been hacked by a Conti ransomware group, with 1330 gigabytes of data being uploaded.

In connection with this data leak, the National Police (Polri) investigates this case and also communicates with BI, Polri’s Public Relations Head Dedi Prasetyo told ANTARA here on Thursday, January 20.

Moreover, Persadha drew attention to the state-owned oil company Pertamina’s leak case.

The website https://recruitment.pertamina-ptc.com still cannot be accessed to this day ever since the news of the data leak surfaced.

Several reasons behind the inaccessibility of the Pertamina Training and Consulting include an audit assessment that had yet to be conducted on the system in the government’s institution.

It is also likely that Pertamina is not yet confident that it has sterilized the system from the malware that the hacker utilized.

Moreover, it may not be sure that it could bolster its defence post-attack to make it safer from a takedown.

It should not take too long for an organization as large as Pertamina to deal with this type of problem, especially since the website involves a third party and utilizes a service level agreement (SLA).

This means, with SLA, there is standardization and accountability regarding the website’s service and others, such as its security.

Points within the SLA are crucial since during several recent hacking cases, the perpetrator had attacked the weakest segment, such as the…

North East businesses should make ethical hacking a new years’ resolution, says cyber expert

Member Article

CyberWhite, a North East based cybersecurity specialist, is encouraging businesses to start the new year emulating a government initiative to give a team of ‘ethical hackers’ the run of Ministry of Defence (MOD) computer systems to find potential weaknesses and threats.

The bug bounty programme will give 26 hackers access to the MOD systems for 30 days to identify areas that might be vulnerable to potential threats from cybercriminals.

CyberWhite has suggested that businesses in the North East could adopt a similar approach, enlisting a cybersecurity specialist to ‘hack’ their own systems to see how easy or difficult it is to access their data.

Businesses could use the exercise to establish the strength of their passwords, whether sensitive documents can be accessed by outside parties, and a company’s vulnerability to viruses.

Matt Hewison, director at CyberWhite, said: “The new year is the perfect time to test your current systems and implement any changes you need to ensure your security.

“The MOD has the right idea, getting ethical hackers to have free rein of the system to really try and flush out the bugs and make sure it’s cyber safe.

“I would encourage local businesses to follow their lead and get their own army of ethical hackers to check exactly how vulnerable their systems are and help them work out how to resolve these issues.”

David Horn, director at CyberWhite, added: “Many business owners are worried about whether their systems are under threat, particularly with the increase in visibility of scammers, and we’ve spoken to a number of people who want peace of mind about the security of their data.

“The MOD are setting a great example in admitting they may have bugs in the system and nipping these problems in the bud. If all businesses did the same, cybercrime would be a thing of the past.”
