Bad News: Virginia Legislature Can’t Sort Out Anti-SLAPP Law; Expect More SLAPP Suits

Last month we were happy to report that both houses of the Virginia legislature had passed anti-SLAPP laws (partially in response to Rep. Devin Nunes’ use of the state for a bunch of SLAPPy libel-tourism lawsuits. As we noted at the time, the two versions that passed through each part of the legislature were somewhat different, so they needed to be reconciled.

Unfortunately, it appears they were unable to reconcile to the two bills. In response to a tweeted question from reporter Rob Pegoaro, Schuyler VanValkenburg, who had introduced the House version of the bill, admitted that they couldn’t reconcile the two, and it would need to wait until next year:

This is disappointing on many levels — especially as we keep seeing so many of these cases being filed in Virginia. Having a good anti-SLAPP bill these days is important, and plenty of damage can be done in the meantime, even if a good bill will be coming next year. This is an unfortunate opportunity lost.

Ashley Madison hauled to court in class action suits over data breach

Legal pressure on Ashley Madison and its parent company is picking up with more class-action lawsuits filed this week in the U.S. against the extramarital hookup site, alleging its negligence in protecting confidential user data.

Suits filed in federal courts in California and Texas by people using John Doe as a pseudonym, claim for damages, alleging that Avid Life Media, the parent company based in Toronto, did not have adequate and reasonable measures to secure the data of users from being compromised, and failed to notify users in time of the breach.

Avid Life Media said it had been made aware of an attack on its systems. Hacker group, Impact Team, released data last week that it claimed it had obtained from the website.

Coolest wearable technology: Robot suits for physical labor

Last year, Daewoo Shipbuilding and Engineering tested robotic suits that give workers superhuman strength to handle heavy objects at its facility in Okpo-dong, South Korea, according to a recent report in the New Scientist.

In the tests, the suits made it easier for the workers to lift and carry 30-kilogram (slightly more than 66 pounds) objects, although the researchers told the New Scientists that the current target is to extend the lifting capacity to 100 kilograms, slightly more than 220 pounds.

Although the suits themselves weigh about 62 pounds, they’re designed to anticipate and respond to the wearer’s physical movements so they never feel like they’re trying to move around in a massive exoskeleton. The prototype of the suit holds a three-hour battery life, which is already quite impressive – three hours of more efficient work with heavy material could open up much more time for the workers to complete their other tasks – and comes equipped with other tools for lifting and manipulating heavy objects.
