CISA deputy director touts progress, anti-ransomware efforts

In 2023 CISA reached its five-year anniversary, and much has happened in those years.

The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, the U.S. government’s federal agency dedicated to cybersecurity-related issues, has had to contend with a global pandemic, multiple geopolitical conflicts, leadership changes and an evolving, increasingly aggressive cyberthreat landscape.

CISA Deputy Director Nitin Natarajan, who was appointed to the role in February 2021, told TechTarget Editorial in an interview that adapting to such a landscape has been a challenge, but the agency has built a team of individuals who are “used to working in fast-paced and dynamic organizations.” Natarajan said CISA has hired well over a thousand staffers in the last few years, while also receiving increased budget support from Capitol Hill and forming partnerships that have helped it scale up.

Said staffers include individuals from backgrounds across the federal government, state governments, local governments, the private sector, the intelligence community, the Department of Defense and more. This wide range of experience, the deputy director said, has enabled CISA to adapt to the volatile, constantly changing cybersecurity landscape.

CISA recently published its 2023 Year in Review, a webpage detailing the agency’s accomplishments last year. Some of these accomplishments include nearly 6,700 engagements with stakeholders in the private and public sectors, newly updated secure-by-design guidance, 1,200 warnings of early-stage ransomware activity, a public service announcement campaign and more.

Natarajan said that of CISA’s 2023 accomplishments, he was most proud of the agency’s partnerships and collaborations with entities such as global government partners; security researchers; and state, local, tribal and territorial governments.

“It’s all about partnerships and collaboration. That is what has allowed us to be successful as well as what has allowed us to mitigate risks. It is what allows us to keep adversaries at bay. It is what’s allowed us to do a lot of what we do,” he said. “It’s not easy. It’s easy to say the words collaboration and partnership, but to really build…

Jamf touts big boost to enterprise security at JNUC

Jamf opened its annual JNUC event for Apple admins today with a slew of announcements focused on device management and security, a new Jamf Trust app, further information on its recently announced ZecOps deal and other updates likely to be of interest to Apple IT professionals.

The company also committed to supporting Microsoft Device Compliance on Macs later this year, with support for Google’s context-aware zero trust framework (BeyondCorp) on iOS devices in early 2023.

What drives the Jamf way?

In advance of JNUC, I spoke with Jamf CEO Dean Hager, who explained the philosophy behind what the company is announcing. Ultimately, it’s a continuation of Jamf’s core mission, which is to bring complex enterprise tech integration into the 21st century by ensuring not only that it supports Apple’s tech, but that its implementation is married to the kind of consumer simplicity you expect on Cupertino’s platforms.

“We’ll kick off the event by asking two simple questions: ‘Do your users love their work technology?’” he said. “‘Does your organization trust all the access that is coming in from that technology?’ And it’s our view that you should see a resounding ‘yes’ to both. We believe that through the melding or the combining of management, software and security software, we feel like that combination is what makes that love and trust possible.”

Jamf also confirmed that it now manages 29 million Apple devices worldwide with 69,000 customers — that’s up 15% since earlier this year. Complex simplicity makes a difference.

Here’s what Jamf unveiled at the start of JNUC 2022

Tanzania: Govt Touts Cooperation in Cybercrime Fight

THE government has vowed to cooperate with other countries in fighting cyber crimes together with empowering its experts.

The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of, Communication and Information Technology, Dr Jim Yonazi made the remarks on Friday at the closing of five day training to police investigators and those in prosecution room on issues related to cybercrimes.

Dr Yonazi said that issue of empowering experts to deal with cybercrime will go hand in hand with cooperation with other countries because cyber security issues are not limited to one country because the criminal can stay in another country and commit crimes in other countries.

He said cooperation and capacity building is necessary to enable them to identify the criminals.

Dr Yonazi said that the government intention is to strengthen national security based on global changes and the development of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) which not only have opened up various opportunities for citizens but also criminals who use the opportunity to commit crimes.

“It is the responsibility of the government to protect its citizens against the crimes conducted through ICT,” Dr Yonaz said.

He said the government has taken a number of initiatives to ensure safety in internet use among other enactment of the Cybercrime Act 2015, Electronic Transactions Act, review of the Electronic and Postal Communications Act (EPOCA), and electronic registration of simcards with the aim of improving security in the country.

Similarly, he said cybercriminals still exist and the government through the Ministry continues to build l capacity and urge the police force to work with integrity and discipline to avoid turnishing the image of the force by few individuals.
