TRAIN operator c2c has joined forces with a missing person’s charity in a bid to help find some of the 170,000 people reported missing every year in the UK.

c2c says missing people are drawn to public transport as a way out of difficult situations.

Meanwhile County Line gangs use trains to move vulnerable young people around the country to sell or transport drugs, with children as young as 11 turning to crime to help their families in the cost-of-living crisis.

The partnership with charity Missing People, on the Safeguarding Briefing Network (SBN), means briefings containing intelligence can be sent to c2c staff who may come into contact with the person.

A spokesman for c2c said: “With 26 stations across our 45-mile route, c2c sees millions of passengers each year.

“Joining the charity’s network increases the chance of finding missing people, and builds on the operator’s focus on safeguarding and security, as well as collaboration with British Transport Police.

“Someone is reported missing every 90 seconds in the UK, with 170,000 people reported missing every year.

“Many missing people are drawn to public transport as a way out of their current situation, as well County Line gangs using the transport network to move vulnerable young people around the UK to sell and transport drugs. And as the cost-of-living crisis continues to impact families, children as young as 11 are now turning to crime to support their families, stay warm and put food on the table.”

They added: “Once c2c receives notification of a missing person through the SBN, the teams of station and mobile security staff are briefed on who to look out for, and guided on what to do if the missing person is seen.

“This can be interacting with the person to let them know they have been reported missing, and passing them details of Missing People to contact them directly if they want to.

“If that isn’t appropriate for any reason, staff can report the sighting back to Missing People to look for other ways to help.

“Deployment on the c2c network is already underway, with missing people already…

Data Brokers Track Abortion Clinic Visits for Anyone to Buy

If the war in Ukraine and Russia’s still-unfolding atrocities there didn’t offer enough fodder for doomscrolling, this week supplied a new dose of domestic crisis: A leaked Supreme Court draft decision that would overturn Roe v. Wade, demolishing a ruling that has served as a cornerstone of reproductive rights for nearly five decades. And this crisis, too, will play out in the digital realm as much as the physical and legal ones.

WIRED’s Lily Hay Newman responded to the news with a guide to protecting your privacy if you’re seeking an abortion in a near-future world in which Roe has in fact been overturned. As right-wing pundits demand the Supreme Court leaker’s prosecution, meanwhile, we analyzed the laws concerning leaks of unclassified government information like a draft court ruling and found that there’s no clear statute criminalizing that sort of information sharing. And law professor Amy Gajda walked us through the history of Supreme Court information leaks, which stretches back hundreds of years.

As Russia’s war in Ukraine grinds on, we looked at how small, consumer-grade drones are offering a defensive tool to Ukrainians that they’re exploiting as in no other war in history. And further abroad in India, a battle is taking shape between VPN firms and the Indian government, which is demanding they hand over users’ data. Meanwhile, the country’s new “super app,” Tata Neu, has sparked user privacy concerns.

And there’s more. As we do every week, we’ve rounded up all the news that we didn’t break or cover in-depth. Click on the headlines to read the full stories. And stay safe out there.

If Roe‘s precedent ceases to protect people seeking abortions across the United States, the question of who can digitally surveil those seeking abortions and abortion providers—and how to evade that surveillance—will become a civil liberties battle of the highest urgency. This week, Motherboard’s Joseph Cox fired the opening salvos of that battle with a series of stories about data brokers who offer to sell location data that include individuals’ visits to abortion clinics and Planned Parenthood offices, an egregious form of surveillance capitalism with immediate human consequences….

Bronx T-Mobile store workers use merchandise security tags to help NYPD track and arrest armed robber in Manhattan – New York Daily News

Traceable electronic security tags on merchandise stolen from a Bronx cell phone store helped cops track down an armed robber after a wild chase Saturday on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, police said.

Two armed men ransacked a T-Mobile location on E. 149 St. near Union Ave. in Woodstock about 3:20 p.m., cops said.

One of the men fled on foot while the other drove off with the stolen goods in a gray BMW.

Quick-thinking store employees began tracking the stolen electronics through security tags the thieves overlooked, police said.

Aided by the store workers and the trackers, cops followed the trail to the Upper East Side, where they soon found the BMW.

When they tried to pull over the car at E. 96 St. and Third Ave., the driver hit the gas, ramming a police vehicle as he tried to escape.

The crook made it just three blocks east when responding officers stopped the BMW on the southbound FDR Drive at E. 96 St.

The suspect ditched the BMW, ran one block up the highway, and tossed something into the East River before cops put him under arrest.

One of the arresting officers injured his wrist during the struggle.

The robber’s name and charges against him were not immediately released. His partner in crime was still being sought late Saturday.

The NYPD’s Harbor Unit and Aviation Unit were searching for the object he threw in the water Saturday evening.
