What’s the best security system? My new(to me)computer will have hardly anything but Windows XP installed.

What is the best way to keep it safe? Keep in mind, I want to download some music, video, photo editing software, and I will be on gamer forums where there is tons of spyware and viruses. I will be putting whatever security system I have to the test. I will be using a very fast cable connection, but I don’t want my security stuff to slow the computer down. I know almost nothing about software so feel free to tell me what’s best.
Anytime I’ve ever tried MacAphee it’s always slowed the computer down so much and offered little protection. The computer I’m on now went for about two yrs without a firewall, except for the windows firewall that obviously does nothing. My dad never got the concept of having a firewall. To him as long as you had Spybot S&D and Adaware you were ok. We’ve tried many things and finally I convinced my dad to get a firewall. He got CA Security Suite. Is it any good? Also he has A macaphee firewall on his new vista laptop. shoould I convince him to get some new stuff for it?

well what works for me is a software firewall … an antispyware app … a nonstandard browser .. and common sense ..

    I would recommend
    AVG Free
    Spybot S&D
    SpywareGuard
    SpywareBlaster
    SyGate Firewall
Preload several online scanners just in case. Once infected it is hard to install security programs.

With any computer things you need will be anti virus protection, anti spy ware, and a firewall, secure your email address.

To provide the best security for your computer, you should have these softwares installed:
    – Antivirus
    – Firewall
There are many antivirus out there (Norton, Nod32, AVG, etc), I prefer AVG Free because it’s been with me for years and never let me down and of course also because it’s free.
For firewall, by default Windows has a built-in firewall installed but it’s not reliable. There are many firewall products out there (ZoneLabs, Norton, etc), but you should use one that will not burden your system because firewall in windows may use so much resource. I think both Norton and ZoneLabs are powerful firewall with good support and update.

    Hi,
Besides all the things that people have recommended to you try creating two different user accounts. One account should have computer administrator rights and let the other account have limited rights. Go to control panel and double click on user accounts besides the one that you have already in there created a limited user account. Use this account for all your online activities like surfing chatting etc, use the account with the complete rights for all of your other system related activities like installing programs etc.
    Hope this helps
